2025 Summer Intern - Center for Advanced Light Microscopy & EM - Research Pathology

Department Summary

The Center for Advanced Light Microscopy and Electron Microscopy (CALM-EM) is the core microscopy resource of Research at Genentech. The mission of CALM-EM is to support and advance research and development projects utilizing methods in optical and electron microscopy and image analysis. We offer expert support on basic and advanced microscopy platforms and analysis software to the Genentech scientific community. Services include technical support, training of scientists, and imaging and analysis of projects. Additionally, the group evaluates and implements new technologies and is a key partner for individual labs identifying and vetting microscopy systems for their specific applications. If you are excited about advancing microscopy and want to gain hands-on experience at the forefront of biomedical innovation, we invite you to apply for an internship with us!

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

We are looking for an enthusiastic intern with experience and interest in microscopy, specifically super-resolution imaging. In this position, you will be working on establishing workflows to perform single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM) with accuracy up to ~10 nm using DNA-PAINT. You will have access to state-of-the-art microscopes to perform imaging and contribute by optimizing the sample preparation, imaging parameters and image analysis.

Your project will be part of our efforts to build end-to-end microscopy and analysis pipelines that support our scientific programs across different therapeutic areas. This is an exceptional opportunity to learn the entire experimental pipeline for super-resolution imaging and apply this technology to highly-relevant biomedical questions coming from multiple therapeutic areas.

Main project activities include

  • Developing staining and sample preparation protocols for validated cellular targets
  • Testing and benchmarking DNA-PAINT reagents and acquisition parameters
  • Performing image reconstruction and analysis of image quality
  • Interpretation of imaging data and evaluation of insights to biological questions of collaborators

The ideal candidate will have experience in sample preparation (cell culture, fixation & antibody staining) and/or high resolution image acquisition. Interest in image analysis is a plus.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)
  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
