The Center for Light and Electron Microscopy (CALM-EM), within the Department of Research Pathology at Genentech, is at the forefront of pioneering imaging methodologies and technologies to push the boundaries of biomedical research. This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to join our team as a summer intern, focusing on advancing methodologies for tissue and organoid clearing. This position will involve developing and optimizing clearing and staining techniques to enable advanced 3D imaging and comprehensive image data analysis. The successful candidate will work closely with scientists in the microscopy and histopathology sections of the Pathology department to contribute to cutting-edge projects that have the potential to significantly impact the field of biomedical research. This experience will provide the intern with valuable insights into how our company works to develop and manufacture medicines that improve the lives of patients worldwide. The internship program will mainly focus on the following:

  • Develop and optimize state-of-the-art tissue and organoid clearing protocols for 3D light microscopy.
  • Validate reagents for improved immunostaining of cleared samples.
  • Utilize advanced 3D imaging techniques, including light sheet microscopy and confocal microscopy, to visualize and study cleared tissues and organoids.
  • Analyze and interpret complex imaging data to understand the spatial organization and interactions of target cells or proteins within tissues and organoids.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-week, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer). 
  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship. 
  • The intern will have ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects and work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.
  • Professional & personal development opportunities throughout the internship program include presentation of projects to collaborators and departmental leadership, networking opportunities, and various seminars & workshops.

Who You Are

Required Education:

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).

Required Majors: Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, or any other related disciplines.

Required Skills: 

  • Hands-on experience with tissue and/or organoid culture and handling.
  • Experience in using, developing, or optimizing tissue clearing protocols for various sample types.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications:

  • Experience with advanced microscopy techniques such as light sheet microscopy and confocal microscopy.
  • Hands-on experience with tools commonly used for 3D image data analysis (e.g., Fiji, Imaris, Python).
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting. 

The expected salary for this position based on the primary location of California is $45 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
