The Scientist is looking for a science journalism intern to research, pitch story ideas, conduct interviews, and write compelling narratives about scientific advances for an audience of life science researchers. Depending on your interest and aptitude, there are also opportunities for collaborating to create custom images or infographics, videos, and podcasts.

Over the course of the six-month internship program, interns will submit 4 pitches and turn in one story draft per week. Regular intern training meetings will be scheduled and required for the team, but working hours (10-15 hours per week) are otherwise flexible. The internship program and schedule fit well for postdoctoral fellows and graduate students working in the lab and for full-time journalism students.

Responsibilities:

  • Research and develop high-quality content for newsletters, including stories, features, and profiles
  • Interpret and communicate scientific literature
  • Stay up to date with the changing needs and interests of scientific researchers

Education and Experience:

  • PhD in the life sciences, or graduate student in a life science PhD program
  • Experience with academic and nonacademic scientific writing and editing
  • Adept at interviewing and communicating with scientists
  • Project management
