Beam is seeking a highly motivated Engineering Co-op within the Engineering and Facilities (E&F) team to support Process Engineering and Automation projects at our cGMP cell and gene therapy site in RTP from July through December 2024.

As a key member within the E&F team in RTP, this role will focus on process improvements and standardization around the Liquid Nano Particle (LNP) and mRNA platforms, as well as developing manufacturing intelligence systems and tools. The role will involve working in industry leading automation systems including Emerson DeltaV, Siemens Desigo and OSI PI. By integrating these systems together, projects in areas of business intelligence, analytics, and data visualization can take place.

Responsibilities:

  • Technical writing for User Requirement Specifications / System Requirement Specifications for new processing skids and updates to current generation of equipment platforms.
  • Coordination with Commissioning and Validation teams identifying testing requirements and supporting validation execution protocols.
  • Supporting process hazard assessments from a technical and end user standpoint.
  • Develop Asset Framework and Event Data Frames in OSI PI.
  • Develop dashboards and visualizations for ongoing measurement and KPIs.
  • Work with analytics applications and tools with the goal of monitoring, analyzing, gaining insight, and predicting based on biologics manufacturing and lab process data sets.
  • Profile source system data as needed to provide feedback for business requirements.
  • Work as integral member of cross-functional team to gather and document requirements to meet business needs.
  • Implement Database Schema designs and data pipelines.

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be a currently enrolled student pursuing a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Chemical/Electrical/Mechanical Engineering discipline.
  • Candidates must have completed at least (2) years of studies toward bachelor’s degree.
  • Excellent problem-solving, presentation, verbal, and written communications skills.

Desirable Skills and Knowledge

  • Process optimization and troubleshooting to enhance efficiency and address challenges in production workflow.
  • Familiarity with instrumentation and control systems used in GMP biotech manufacturing plants to monitor and control manufacturing processes.
  • Basic project management skills to coordinate tasks, meet deadlines and contribute to the successful completion of projects.
  • Safety Awareness – supporting the E&F commitment to safety and providing a safe workplace.
  • Critical Thinking and the ability to analyze situations critically, identify potential issues and propose effective solutions.
  • Experience with SQL, and Microsoft SQL server database administration desired.
  • Experience with API and interfacing with cloud hosted systems desired.
  • Knowledge of industrial manufacturing equipment including utilities systems.
  • Effective communication and collaboration with cross functional teams, as well as the ability to convey technical information to larger audiences.
  • Prior experience with cell/gene therapies is a plus (LNP / mRNA).
  • The candidate should have a solid academic foundation in engineering, science and mathematics coursework.
