Mechanical Engineering internship: improvement and testing of DSMC SPARTA

ASML

Introduction

Flows of contaminants within the scanner of ASML machines can significantly affect performance. It is therefore of great importance to simulate such flows. Because of the molecular scales at which diffusion of contaminants occurs, the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC), which is a particle-based method typically used to simulate gas flows, is a suitable choice for such kind of problems. Because of the typical conditions found in the applications of interest, a passive scalar approach (PSA) can correctly capture the relevant physics: contaminants in very low concentrations are convicted and diffuse in a background gas stream.

Your Assignment

The goal of this internship project is to verify and validate the implementation of the PSA module recently developed within the DSMC opensource code SPARTA. During the internship, you will work on a state-of-the-art code. At first, the focus is on the verification of the code implementation of the PSA module. Then, the module is validated against known results. You will contribute to both phases devising verification and validation tests inspired by literature and/or other numerical methods results.

This is a Master internship, both an apprentice or a graduation, for the duration of 6 or more months, 5 days a week, starting as soon as possible.

Your Profile

To be a match for this internship, you:

  • Are a master student in the direction of Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering;
  • Have experience and interest in coding;
  • Have (at least basic) knowledge of rarefied gas flows;
  • Preferably possess experience with DSMC or with using High performance cluster;
  • Have strong analytical skills and a problem-solving mentality;
  • Have good communication skills in English (verbal and written).

Other requirements you need to meet:

  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;
  • You are located in the Netherlands to perform your internship. In case you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate;
  • If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.
