General Summary

Western Michigan University invites applications for the position of Faculty Specialist- Lecturer in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences in Kalamazoo, MI. The ideal candidate is a person who displays strong leadership skills in academic education, program coordination, and community engagement. This is a full-time, tenure-track, academic-year position with the potential for summer teaching and coordination, with an expected start date of August 15, 2025. This position assumes the role of American Sign Language Program (ASL) coordinator.

Major Duties

  • Curriculum development.
  • ASL instruction at multiple levels.
  • ASL program coordination.
  • Development of the ASL program and enhancement of its visibility.
  • Cultivate connections with the Deaf/HH community.
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration with departmental faculty, including speech-language pathologists and audiologists.
  • Engagement in faculty governance procedures through service at the Department, College, and University levels.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • 3 years of ASL teaching experience at the post-secondary level with evidence of teaching excellence.
  • Evidence of ASL proficiency.
  • Evidence of knowledge, connection, and appreciation of Deaf culture.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Graduate degree in a related field from an accredited institution or willingness to work toward a Master’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • An established record of teaching excellence across multiple levels of ASL including Deaf culture at the post-secondary level.
  • Experience developing and implementing outreach programs with the Deaf/HH community.
  • Experience in program coordination and curriculum development.

The college also houses the Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Program. The college also operates the Center for Disability Services, Aging Services, the Resiliency Center for Families and Children, and the Unified Clinics, a multidisciplinary service/training clinic. CHHS is housed on east campus in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with online and regional programs that extend the depth and breadth of the college’s access and influence.

Approximately 100 board appointed faculty serve approximately 1,202 undergraduate and 715 graduate students, with majors and programs that lead to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. A number of graduate certification programs and undergraduate minors are also offered.

The students and faculty of the College of Health and Human Services extend the energy of the college and University through significant efforts toward community engagement and service. Department: The Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences enrolls approximately 60 students in the two-year M.A. program in speech-language pathology, 130 in the undergraduate major, and supports a minor in American Sign Language. Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences faculty are engaged in active research with students, classroom and clinical teaching through the on-campus Van Riper Language, Speech, and Hearing Clinics, and service to the university and professions. The Department is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Opportunities exist for interprofessional collaborations within the College, across the University, and with the Western Michigan University School of Medicine.
