The UAIR office is seeking a Senior Business Data Analyst that will play a pivotal role in driving data informed decision-making across the university. This position will be responsible for interpreting and analyzing complex datasets to support strategic planning, operational improvements, and initiatives related to student success. The Senior Business Data Analyst will work closely with university leadership, faculty, and staff to identify key performance indicators and create actionable insights that support student success goals at the University of Utah. The successful candidate will be a seasoned professional with a strong background in data analysis, data visualization, and collaborating with decision makers and stakeholders.

The UAIR office houses a transformational group of data professionals that turn complex university data into meaningful, highly valued information, trusted by university leadership to drive strategic decisions and generate official figures reported to regulatory, external and public agencies.

Like many areas at the University of Utah, our office is primarily a remote-work environment. As such, it is intended that this position will be fully remote, though the opportunity for occasional in-person meetings on campus will arise. Ideally, some initial training and onboarding could be in-person. We expect to continue our remote-work arrangements and will review this annually. More details can be discussed in an interview.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with university leadership, faculty and staff to understand data needs and requests for information
  • Conduct institutional research and engage in projects that identify actionable data-driven business solutions to achieve institutional goals related to student success initiatives
  • Proactively monitor and evaluate trends, outcomes, and key performance indicators related to student success
  • Query, interpret and analyze complex datasets from institutional data warehouses
  • Develop and maintain interactive dashboards and comprehensive reports for campus stakeholders
  • Maintain familiarity with evolving literature on student success and methodologies employed in a higher education context

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 4-6 years of experience in institutional research, business analytics, data science or related field
  • Proficiency in querying, manipulating and analyzing complex datasets
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to present complex data to both technical and non-technical audiences 
  • Demonstrated experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau, Microsoft Power Bi, etc.
  • Experience with data querying languages such as SQL or data manipulation tools such R, Python, Excel, etc. 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and work collaboratively across teams

Preferences

  • Higher education experience performing institutional research, business analytics, or data science
  • Experience with utilizing data to support strategic planning related to student success initiatives in higher education
  • Proficient with data visualization tools such as Tableau, Microsoft Power Bi, etc.
  • Proficiency in data querying languages such as Oracle SQL Developer, PeopleSoft and/or statistical software such R, Stata, Python, etc.
  • Experience performing institutional research analyses that employ advanced statistical analyses and/or predictive analytics
  • 4 or more years of experience in any of the following areas a plus:
  • Business systems analysis with a strong understanding of data and process flows, liaising with functional and technical groups, auditing data, troubleshooting and issue resolution
  • Data reporting and analysis, building queries from large relational databases to audit data, perform ad hoc analysis, generate standard reports, and deliver meaningful results
  • Higher education administration with specific knowledge in student data
  • A Master’s degree in a related field
