Software Engineering Internship (Non-thesis): EUV Projection Software

ASML

Introduction

Are you a bachelor's student in Computer Science or Embedded Systems looking for an apprentice internship? Do you like coding and have good knowledge in C++ and python? Then this internship might be interesting to you!

Background information

The department is responsible for projecting the image on reticle to the silicon wafer. An important part of what makes ASML machines cutting edge is its imaging capability to make chips smaller, faster and cheaper. Your future team (under EUV Projection software group) is responsible for the software of the projection subsystem, which makes images of reticle patterns on the wafer with nanometer accuracy. The projection software performs complex mirror movements and thermal control to accomplish this.

Your assignment

This software engineering internship vacancy comprises of 4 different assignments. The hiring team will assess all applicants and allocate the assignments based on their needs. This will be further discussed during the interview stage.

First assignment

Title: Lean Configuration Management proposal

Your tasks will include analyzing the existing configuration using existing tooling and your own creativity. Proposing a vision/simplification that handles the same variance with a smaller set of parameters. Implementing a number of these simplifications in the software and propose a roadmap for the remaining items. Expected results: 'report showing an analysis of the current status with one or more improvement proposals (if possible)' and 'at least one simplification implemented in software.'

Second assignment

Title: Develop Software Interface Tracing Tooling

Develop tooling that uses interface function tracing to extract the actual function calls that the projection subsystem receives during certain scenarios like initialization or wafer exposure. The extracted information shall be converted in a format that can be fed in a tool which can be used to replay these scenarios for diagnostic and testing purposes. Expected outputs are 'Definition of the data format in such a way that it can easily be adjusted for alternative scenarios without using the real system', 'A tool that generates the data from extracted information' and 'A tool that replays the scenario that is in the data format.'

Third assignment

Title: Develop Software Driver Trace Library

Develop a tracing library to intercept the data from actual function calls that the projection subsystem receives during certain scenarios like initialization or wafer exposure with minimal performance penalty. The information shall be saved to the disk using an efficient compression format when memory limits on the deployed host are reached. The information on the disk shall be used for diagnostic purposes. Expected outputs are 'Design of the trace library', 'Implementation of the trace library' and 'Optimize the trace library for performance.'

Fourth assignment

Title: Simulation code generation for motion control platform

A motion control platform is used to achieve the image projection. A software abstraction is made over the actual hardware of the system. To qualify as much of the SW as possible prior to integration, software simulation of the hardware is used. You will extend existing tools that use models to generate C++ code, such that python simulation classes can also be generated from the same model. You will document the framework and usage of the generated proxies. Testing and qualification are expected as part of the internship.

Your Profile

To be a perfect match for this internship, you:

  • Are a bachelor's student in Computer Science, Embedded Systems or a related study.
  • Are proficient in coding (C++ or a C style language, Python). Knowledge of design patterns and design principles is a nice to have.
  • Are creative, curious, goal oriented and capable of working independently.
  • Have good communication skills and understand the value of listening with the aim to understand.
  • Are fluent in English both verbally and in writing.

This is a bachelor internship with a duration of a minimum of 3 months, for 5 days a week, starting in September 2024 (Q3).

Please note that we can only consider students who are enrolled at an educational institution for the entire duration of the internship.

This position requires access to U.S. controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations. Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such U.S. controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with applicants who are immediately eligible to access U.S. controlled technology.

Change the world – one nanometer at a time

Become an intern at a Dutch company that’s a global industry leader. You’ll gain valuable experience in a highly innovative environment – one that sparks your imagination and creativity. In addition to a monthly internship allowance of maximum €600 (plus a possible housing and free public transport), you’ll get practical guidance from experts in the field and the chance to work in and experience a dynamic team environment.

ASML - be part of progress

ASML is a high-tech company headquartered in the Netherlands. We manufacture the complex lithography machines that chipmakers use to produce integrated circuits, or computer chips. What we do is at the heart of all the electronic devices that keep us informed, entertained and connected. Every day, you use electronics that simply wouldn’t exist without our machines.

Behind ASML’s innovations are engineers who think ahead. The people who work at our company include some of the most creative minds in physics, electrical engineering, mathematics, chemistry, mechatronics, optics, mechanical engineering, computer science and fields which are not technical oriented.

We believe we can always do better. We believe the winning idea can come from anyone. We love what we do – not because it’s easy, but because it’s hard.

Students - getting ready for real-world R&D

We’re a global team of about 39,000 people of 140 different nationalities and counting. Headquartered in Europe’s top tech hub, the Brainport Eindhoven region in the Netherlands, our operations are spread across Europe, Asia and the US.

In such an environment, your colleagues may be sitting next door, or they could be thousands of kilometers away in a different country – or even working for a different company.

An internship at ASML is the opportunity to get to know not only the world of industrial-strength R&D, but yourself – you’ll discover just what excites you most. Will you design a part of the machine, or make sure it gets built to the tightest possible specifications? Will you write software that drives the system to its best performance, or work side-by-side with the engineers of our customers in a fab, optimizing a system to the requirements of the customer?

How will you be part of progress?
