The Electrical Product Team is seeking to fill an electro-optical system architect E44 Engineering Fellow position. The Fellow is responsible for architecting new and advanced electro-optical sensors in support new product development and supporting these product developments through their development, implementation, verification, and maintenance. Additionally, they are responsible for identifying strategic electro-optical sensing product development opportunities, and proposing and coordinating Independent Research and Development (IRAD) projects across programs and product lines. They work closely with engineers in systems, signal processing and algorithms, electro-optical systems, optics, opto-mechanics, detectors, cryogenics, and electro-optical system test and verification, and are highly visible, influential, and accountable within the Raytheon Missiles and Defense programs and leadership community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead selection of sensing solutions for electro-optical products with considerations for its role in the system, all phases of engineering and production, and the product life cycle.
  • Lead trade studies on various sensing systems such as aperture size, wavebands, sensitivity, etc.
  • Lead/support electro-optical modeling and simulation activities.
  • Lead electro-optical sensing requirements development and requirement flow to its components.
  • Drive the development, implementation, verification and maintenance of electro-optical sensors in close collaboration with other disciplines to provide a mature optimized missile product.
  • Support development and implementation of video processing methodologies and algorithms in conjunction with sensing selections.
  • Identify strategic electro-optical sensing development opportunities
  • Propose and lead independent research and development (IRAD) projects for the advancement of electro-optical sensors
  • Ensure balance of risk, performance, and cost.
  • Be accountable for technical decisions.
  • Participate in major technical review boards, e.g., Failure Review Board
  • Communicate and collaborate with Program Management and Technical Leadership, Engineering Leadership, Manufacturing, Suppliers, and Customers.
  • Guide, apprentice, mentor, and train employees within the electro-optical sensor area
  • Responsible for providing guidance, coaching / mentoring and training to other employees across the business within area of expertise.

U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position needs an active U.S. Security Clearance as of day one of employment.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • A minimum of 12 years of Professional Engineering Experience
  • Experience with infrared Electro-optical sensor design – including: testing for MWIR (3-5 µm) and LWIR (8-12 µm) specific to: optical materials, telescopes, domes, detectors, and signal processing.
  • Experience Electro-optical sensing - including any of the following: systems engineering, signal processing & algorithms, electro-optical systems, optics, opto-mechanics, cryogenics, electro-optical system test and/or verification.
  • Experience leading electro-optical trade studies and engineering efforts involving engineers across multiple disciplines.
  • Experience of sensor signal processing and algorithm methods for temporal noise processes, target detection and tracking, and optimizing seeker performance.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office and Matlab.

Required Education (including Major):

M.S in Physics, Optics or other related engineering field

This position requires the successful issuance, transfer or maintenance of any clearances and/or accesses necessary for the position. Non-US citizens may not be eligible to obtain a security clearance. The Defense Industrial Security Clearance Office (DISCO), an agency of the Department of Defense, handles and adjudicates the security clearance process. Security clearance factors include, but are not limited to, allegiance to the US, foreign influence, foreign preference, criminal conduct, security violations and drug involvement.
