The Mechanical Subsystems Directorate (MSD) is searching for a Control Actuation System (CAS) systems design engineer with experience across actuation subsystems and applications. In this position, the candidate will be responsible for developing technical solutions to a wide range of complex problems related to the entire product life cycle including proposal, requirements, design, analysis, manufacturing, integration and test of various types of CAS for multiple missile programs. Solutions may be developed wholly within Raytheon or in collaboration with system and subsystem suppliers. This position can be located in Tucson, AZ or Huntsville, AL.

The candidate will require an understanding and application of technical expertise in the mechanical engineering field with full knowledge of all other related disciplines. On new development programs, the candidate will be responsible for the definition of CAS performance requirement, derivation and allocation of lower level requirements, definition of mechanical, electrical, and logical interfaces, integration and test planning, and balancing design margin and risk across CAS subsystems (actuators, electronics, structures, harnesses, batteries, and algorithms). In support of proposal efforts, the candidate will be responsible for developing CAS design approaches leveraging established architectures, technologies, and re-use products. Design approach will be supported by initial sizing analyses and pre-design tools for selecting major components such as DC motors, gear ratio, gear reduction mechanism layout, electronics power requirements, and battery power and energy required.

The candidate will be responsible for scoping work and setting the technical objectives of assignments as well as developing CAS system design strategies across programs and product lines. The candidate will coach and mentor junior engineers with respect to technical details of CAS system design as well as provide guidance as to the system design processes and procedures. They will participate in CAS requirement, design, analysis, and development process improvement initiatives in an effort to reach process unification across the business. The position will require frequent interaction with senior personnel such as Chief Engineers and Engineering Fellows in other disciplines on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations, and physical locations. It will also require periodic travel to supplier/partner facilities to support various missile programs.

U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position needs an active U.S. Security Clearance as of day one of employment.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • A minimum of 12 years of experience in control actuation systems engineering
  • Demonstrated knowledge of / experience in:
  • Engineering design in development projects
  • Proposal and cost preparation, requirements definition, and control actuation systems subsystems analysis, test and verification; operational test support; supplier collaboration
  • Control actuation system requirements including flow down from top level system and derivation and allocation to components
  • Systems architecture definition for control systems working across mechanical, electrical, interconnect, manufacturing, algorithm, software/firmware, and test disciplines
  • Control actuation system subsystem technology readiness level (TRL) maturation
  • Validation and verification of control actuation system components via system performance modelling and/or development and qualification tests of subsystems
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Work, Excel, Power Point & Project)
