The Data Engineer Intern will support the development of data pipelines, systems, and processes for Tesla’s Environmental Health, Safety and Security (EHS&S) Org. The intern will have a unique opportunity to improve how Tesla uses data in an EHS&S context. This includes collecting and processing data while ensuring quality and availability for downstream uses. This role has a strong technical component, where critical and structured thinking are a big bonus.

Data is deeply embedded in the culture at Tesla. We rely on data – lots of it – to improve our products, to optimize results, and to proactively detect opportunities for advancement. As an EHS&S Data Engineer Intern, you will be part of the team that solves issues that affect Tesla’s impact on the environment and employee health, safety, and security by using data and reporting metrics to identify potential problems in the field, investigate discrepancies, and initiate repair actions when needed. Your tasks will include data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) processes, as well as assisting in the development of data models and integration with various data sources.

What You'll Do

Assist in the design, development, and maintenance of ETL/ELT processes that collect and transform data from diverse sources

Collaborate with the team to optimize data pipelines and ensure reliability in our processes

Implement quality checks and monitor data integrity throughout the data flow

Work with various stakeholders to understand their data needs and translate requirements into effective data solutions

Write and optimize dbt/SQL queries to retrieve and manipulate data from our warehouse solution

Develop Python scripts to automate data-related tasks and improve overall data workflow

Contribute to the documentation of data engineering processes, data models, and best practices

What You'll Bring

Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field

Good working knowledge of SQL language and relational databases (e.g., MS SQL, MySQL)

Strong understanding of Python and ability to write efficient and well-documented code

Solid problem-solving and critical thinking skills

Level C1 English (written and spoken)

Eagerness to learn and adapt to new technologies and tools in the data engineering domain

Familiarity and experience with data warehousing concepts, Apache Airflow, dbt, ELT/ETL processes is a plus
