The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff, represented by 15 collective negotiations agreements, and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations, which encompasses an expansive range of comprehensive service and business operations across the State of New Jersey. These include planning and construction, facilities, public safety and emergency operations, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Sr Design Engineer Mechanical for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). Under the guidance and direction of the Assistant Director of Construction Technology in the Office of Architecture and Design, this professional coordinates, develops, designs, and budgets mechanical systems for renovation, alternation, and new construction projects and acts as the University’s representative for design related mechanical issues on larger construction projects being designed by independent engineering consultants.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • This position has statewide responsibilities, addressing a wide variety of academic, administrative, research, healthcare, and infrastructure projects.
  • Interfaces with a dynamic team of university technical staff including project management, maintenance, safety, controls, commissioning and utilities groups to ensure that mechanical designs are implemented properly from conception through final acceptance.
  • Responsible for the content and interpretation of the mechanical design content included in the University Design Standards.
  • Provides mechanical engineering guidance to the Project Manager.
  • Responsible for reviewing, signing and sealing in house mechanical designs.
  • Responsible for the professional engineering review of documents created by external consultants to ensure projects comply with University Design Standards and applicable codes.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in mechanical engineering from a college or university with a TAC/ABET accredited engineering technology program.
  • A minimum of five (5) years post‐licensure in the field of engineering, with demonstrated knowledge of design and construction principles.

Certifications/Licenses

  • Requires current registration or licensure as a Professional Engineer in the United States.
  • Upon hire, the employee will have six months to obtain a New Jersey Professional Engineer license.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience with Fire Protection Systems and Building Automation Systems.
  • Strong communication skills are required, as is the ability to work with a wide range of technical, professional, and academic personnel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Seven (7) to ten (10) years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Experience in mechanical engineering design for higher education facilities is preferred.

Equipment Utilized

  • Proficiency in standard office equipment and Microsoft Office platform required.
  • Proficiency with HVAC load calculation and related engineering software programs.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Most duties will be undertaken in a standard office environment.
  • Some duties will require travel among campuses and to off‐site locations, and site tours at active construction sites will occur.
