Note: The length of this internship is expected to be approximately four (4) months, May - September.

The Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) is hiring a Summer Camp Coordination Intern to assist with coordinating DPR summer camp programs and ensuring contract compliance for vendor-run summer camp programs. This Intern will conduct daily site visits to summer camp programs, complete program assessments of contracted summer camp providers, document compliance findings, and provide program feedback.

Major Job Duties:

  • Performing site/program audits throughout the summer, minimum of two (2) per day, to confirm contract compliance including camp safety and preparedness, appropriate staff certifications, and student-staff program ratios;
  • Managing camp rosters to ensure accurate participation counts, payments, identify fee reduction participants, and confirm eligibility of participants;
  • Reviewing weekly survey results to identify trends, concerns to be addressed, and providing feedback on results;
  • Resolving customer complaints via in-person visits, emails, or phone calls;
  • Assisting with managing vendor specialty visits and contractor invoices for camp programs to ensure timely completion of payments/invoices;
  • Assisting with the organization and development of the County-wide camp catalog; and
  • Performing other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of at least two years (60 semester hours) in a Bachelor’s degree program in Parks & Recreation Management, Sports Management, Recreation & Leisure Studies, or related field at the time of hire;
  • Little to no professional experience related to the area of work assignment.

Desirable Qualifications: Preference may be given to applicants with experience in one or more of the following:

  • A 3.0 grade point average (GPA);
  • Experience assisting with recreational sports programs administration, working in a summer camp environment, and understanding camp policies;
  • Familiarity with RecTrac or similar recreation management software;
  • Advanced skills with MS Office software including MS Word and MS Excel; and/or
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

Special Requirements

Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It will include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Driver's License: Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver’s license, and must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon favorable review of the applicant’s driving record. The applicant must have the ability and willingness to use a County vehicle to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite.

Additional Information

Work hours: Monday - Friday in-person, 8:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. with a flexible schedule. This position must commit to 40-hours per week from May to September, but with flexibility in spring/fall during school.
