Summer Camp Gymnastics - Instructor I/II

The Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) Gymnastics Camp is seeking Camp Gymnastics Instructors I/II to support camp programs and instruct campers ages 6-9 years old in beginner-intermediate level gymnastics skills.

Job Duties:

  • Teaching gymnastics skills, managing gymnastics rotations, overseeing camp activities such as crafts, games (inside/outside), water day, and other activities as scheduled;
  • Supervising campers during activities, snack and lunch, and special visits;
  • Preparing for camp activities, completing attendance reports, completing camp paperwork; and
  • Set up and breakdown equipment before and after camp, including inspecting and reporting unsafe equipment.

Gymnastics Summer Camp runs from June 22 - August 14 (core camp dates). Staff must be able to commit to working at least the first half (sessions 1- 4) or second half of camp (sessions 5-8). Mandatory Trainings begin mid to late May through June, which will include online courses, virtual and in-person trainings during weekday evenings, and possibly Saturdays. Camp hours are from 9:00am-3:00pm, working hours for camp are from 8:30am-3:30pm. Several positions are available.

Successful candidates will have good character and integrity, effective communication skills, reliable transportation, the ability to complete tasks, take initiative, and work successfully in a team environment. Training in teaching gymnastics skills will be provided.

GYMNASTICS INSTRUCTOR I: @ $21.45/Hourly

Assisting in the planning and managing recreation activities, behavior management of participants, and the evaluations of activities and participants.

Minimums:

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent; plus
  • 400 hours of technical gymnastics experience, including any work, volunteer, or formal art participation.

GYMNASTICS INSTRUCTOR II: @ $25.43/Hourly

Planning and leading recreation and gymnastics activities.

Minimums:

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent;
  • 800 hours of technical gymnastics experience, including any work, volunteer, or formal art participation; plus
  • Must have 50 hours as an instructor.*

Substitution: Additional education in a related field may be substituted for the experience requirement, with each year of post-high school education substituting for 400 hours of technical experience. *However, additional education may not substitute the instructing hours.

Licenses/Certifications: First Aid/CPR/AED Certification, or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience/certification in the following:

  • Working in Summer Camp programs or Arlington Camps;
  • Interest and/or experience in promoting physical fitness;
  • Teaching gymnastics or involvement in a competitive or recreational gymnastics program;
  • Experience and/or willingness to work with individuals with disabilities; and/or
  • Possess gymnastics certification(s).

Special Requirements

If selected, all summer staff may be required to:

  • Agree to a criminal background check (for applicants 18 years and older).
  • Provide references, which will be requested at time of interview.
  • Attend all required trainings, wear a uniform, and have the ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Stand and walk for prolonged periods of time during the work shift.
  • Be CPR and First Aid Certified by the first day of camp for designated positions.
  • Possess a driver's license and successfully complete a driving license record check (for applicants 18 years and older).
  • Provide personal care as needed to campers (training provided).
  • Arlington County requires that all employees have a bank account to accept direct payroll deposits.

Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:30 am – 3:30pm.

Interviews will be conducted on a continuous basis. Interested applicants should apply as soon as possible. Written notifications will be sent to applicants who applied but were not hired once all positions are filled. Generally, these notifications are sent in mid-July.
