This program is designed for students currently pursuing a two- or four-year degree, who have completed a portion of their curriculum, and will be completing their program after the internship experience. It is not designed for graduates.

Job Description:

3-month positions (May 2026 through August 2026)

8-month positions (May 2026 through December 2026)

Duties/Tasks:

Duties at the surface coal mine will be wide and varied, based on the needs of the operation. These duties may include all or some of the following:

  • Surveying – Assist the survey crew with office computations and fieldwork utilizing GPS, drones, robotic total station, or a remote-controlled boat.
  • Computer – Work with various forms of engineering/surveying data to produce reports or studies.
  • Permitting – Assist in the preparation of mining maps and permits. Design – Assist in engineering projects with field oversite and/or design of mine roads, ponds, and special projects.
  • Sampling - Work on the groundwater, soil sampling, and geological programs.
  • MSHA law/safety/environmental – Perform job duties in accordance with MSHA law and regulations, established company safety procedures, and state and federal environmental regulations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

The successful applicant should have strong computer skills (experience with Microsoft Office and AutoCAD are a plus), have a valid driver license, and be able to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.

Educational Requirements:

Enrolled in accredited engineering/surveying program and in good academic standing.
