This program is designed for students currently pursuing a two- or four-year degree, who have completed a portion of their curriculum, and will be completing their program after the internship experience. It is not designed for graduates.

Job Description:

Duties/Tasks:

Duties at the surface coal mine will be wide and varied, based on needs of the operation. These duties may include all or some of the following:

  • Vegetation assessment and mapping on reclaimed wetlands and shelterbelts.
  • Wildlife monitoring on pre-mine and post-mine areas. Compile written and tabular data monitoring reports as required by state and federal wildlife agencies.
  • Ground/Surface Water Monitoring - assist with recording levels and sampling water from several ground/surface water monitoring sites located within the vicinity of the mine.
  • Assist the survey crew with fieldwork and office computations.
  • Working with various forms of mine data to produce reports or studies.
  • Soil Sampling and Probing – assist mine site employees with on-going soil probing and collection of soil samples.
  • Produce and modify mine site maps with the use of computer program AutoCAD.
  • Escort contractor around mine site to spray noxious weeds.
  • Perform job duties in accordance with MSHA law and regulations, established company safety procedures, and state and federal environmental regulations.

Falkirk looks at this position as an opportunity to expose an Environmental Science, Wildlife, or Biology student to a varied field and office experience. At the same time Falkirk will utilize the individual time to accomplish tasks that will benefit the operation.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

The successful applicant will require knowledge of plant/wildlife identification and the use of taxonomic keys. They should have strong computer skills (experience with Microsoft Office and AutoCAD are a plus), have a valid driver license, and be able to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.

Educational Requirements:

Enrolled in accredited environmental science, wildlife or biology program and in good academic standing.
