Our expectations:

Develop analytical methods to quantify the non-CO2 climate impacts of aircraft and use these methods with engine performance models to evaluate environmental impact of current and future technologies.

What your day to day will look like:

The student will be part of the advanced performance engineering team and will have access to the experience, tools, and data available within this organization. The focus will be on research, modeling, and analysis of engine performance and non-CO2 climate impacts, particularly how these are quantified in engine performance.

Key tasks may include but are not limited to:

  • Support the Advanced Performance team in evaluating engine performance of current and future products.
  • Develop expertise in aviation climate science and metrics appropriate for engine design.
  • Improve and deploy aviation contrail modeling methods within P&WC
  • Developed and execute large scale contrail simulations using P&WC HPC resources
  • Contribute to developing an engine performance modeling framework for non-CO2 effects.
  • Investigate the effects of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and Hydrogen on non-CO2 impacts
  • Execute engine cycle simulations to evaluate non-CO2 performance metrics.
  • Create and deliver presentations at team meetings (in person and teleconference).

What you need to be successful:

Must haves:

  • Be eligible to work in Canada
  • Be enrolled in a Canadian university throughout your internship
  • Be able to work on-site in the province where you are hired
  • Pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, engineering science, applied computing, computer science, or sustainable development
  • Comfortable working in multidisciplinary problems that include physics, mathematics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and algorithm development
  • Advanced capabilities in Microsoft Excel and object-oriented programming in Python

Assets:

  • Advanced python skills with memory optimisation, expertise in object oriented and multiprocessing based coding
  • Comfortable working in shell / HPC environments
  • Experience with physics-based modeling and data analysis (excel, matlab, python)
  • Critical thinking and curiosity
  • Self driven
  • Knowledge and interest in sustainability as it related to aviation
  • Effective communication and documentation skills (e.g. MS office)
