Introduction:
The Pathways to Public Service Program is an initiative that strengthens the pipeline of diverse talent from local colleges and universities, including Howard University, the University of the District of Columbia, and Bowie State University, into District government roles. The program is designed to provide 12-month public service apprenticeships, professional mentorship, and direct hiring pathways for participants into full-time government employment.

Duties and Responsibilities
Provides customer technical support services to staff which includes, installation, testing and configuration of desktop computers and applications, troubleshooting, and other related technology specifications. Manages and maintains workstation desktop computers, network printers and copiers. Ensures communication links between client, server, and mainframe computers are operational by monitoring performance and resetting/reprogramming terminal servers, and gateways as needed. Monitors performance of all supported computer systems and schedules application programs and system utilities to ensure customer satisfaction. Conducts one-on-one or small group virtual or in person training sessions with staff and/or management to ensure accurate utilization of systems and software applications.
Develops and maintains accurate inventory of IT hardware/software and telecommunications equipment for the agency. Ensures appropriate systems hardware maintenance system file backup, system storage utilization, and system hardware/software data security. Works within a vendor's solution framework and establishes standards and best practices for implementing and releasing high quality custom software. Performs application testing on vendor software upgrades and the implementation of in-house specifications and customizations.
Qualifications:
To participate in the Pathways to Public Service, you must have the following eligibility requirements:
Education: All academic degrees and coursework must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions. Degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks.
Or
Experience: Experience must be IT-related; the experience may be demonstrated by paid or unpaid experience and/or completion of specific, intensive training (for example, IT certification), as appropriate.
And
Specialized Experience: This position requires one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lowest grade level in the District of Columbia government. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Such experience is typically gained in the IT field or through the performance of work where the primary concern is IT.

Tour of Duty: Monday - Friday 8:30 am - 5:00 pm
Operating Status: In-person reporting, flexible and limited telework options available upon position eligibility and operational needs.

Duration of Appointment: Career Service - Term (13-month appointment)
Pay Plan, Series, Grade: CS-2210-12
Salary: Apprentices will earn an annual salary of $80,784
Collective Bargaining Unit: This position is not covered under collective bargaining.
Position Designation: This position has been designated as security sensitive therefore the incumbent of this position will be subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of DC Personnel Regulations, Suitability, and as such, incumbents of this position shall be subject to criminal background checks, background investigations, and mandatory drug and alcohol testing, as applicable.

District government provides a full benefits package including:
District Government employees earn 4 hours of paid leave each pay period (every two weeks) until they have 3 years of service, at which point they begin accruing 6 hours of paid leave per pay period. The District provides employees with paid leave on 12 annual holidays per year.
