Computer Science | Artificial Intelligence internship: automated GUI testing using LLMs

ASML

Introduction

The Machine Control & Infrastructure (MCI) department is responsible for the definition and handling of various machine input settings. These settings are used by customers of ASML to define the structure and layout of a wafer along with all settings needed to correctly process wafers in the ASML Lithography machine. The human machine interface by which customers can provide these settings has been written in Motif many years ago. For Motif no automated test framework was available, so many tests had to be done manually ever since. Part of the implementation, however, has been converted to the Qt framework. This allows us to use Squish Graphical User Interface (GUI) test automation to automate the tests.

Your Assignment

Recipe Definition Data Manager (RDDM) is the UI component that has been build using Motif (legacy) and QT (partly migrated). RDDM is a large component that roughly occupies half of all code in Lot input data. However, test coverage of RDDM can be improved, and hence Squish is used to automatically test RDDM. However, writing Squish test cases is a laborious job that takes a lot of effort and is not scalable (expected to take several years). Therefore, you will investigate how we can increase RDDM test coverage efficiently. Some research directions for you include:

  • Squish supports monkey testing. How can we improve this monkey testing to make it suitable for extending RDDM coverage?
  • To what extent can the test cases be generated?
  • To what extent can AI help to generate the test cases (semi) automatically?
  • Are LLMs suitable for this? How well do current LLMs perform on this task / In what areas are improvements necessary?

This is a Master graduation internship for around 6 months, working 5 days per week (onsite). The start date of this internship is as soon as possible.

Your Profile

To be a fit for this assignment, you:

  • Are busy with your master's in Computer Science, Software Engineering, ICT, or relevant;
  • Have an affinity with the testing domain;
  • Have experience with Qt, C/C++ and Python;
  • Are eager to learn and are open-minded;
  • Possess good analytical skills;
  • Have good communication skills in English (verbal and written).

Other requirements you need to meet:

  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;
  • You are located in the Netherlands to perform your internship. In case you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate;
  • If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work.
