The hourly research assistant (up to 40 hrs/week) will be responsible for literature review, working with 3D bathymetric models of coral environments, as well as working with instrumentation and assisting other lab members with experiments, to support an NSF-funded project studying hydrodynamics in benthic environments. The hourly research assistant will have experience working on engineering problems with environmental/societal applications and will work in the Chase Ocean Engineering Laboratory at UNH.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Literature review and background research on interactions between seagrass and coral with flow (~30% time)
  • Work with 3D bathymetric models of real coral environments to develop a preliminary set of bathymetric conditions for flume experiments (~30% time)
  • Learn to use single-point velocimeters in the lab (~20% time)
  • Assist other lab members with experiments (~20% time)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Experience with programming and analysis in Matlab or similar programming language
  • Experience with hands-on experimental or engineering design work
  • Experience contributing to a diverse working environment

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Ability to work individually as well as part of a broader team
  • Ability to create plans and deadlines, and meet benchmarks with the support of the primary supervisor

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest in interdisciplinary and marine research
