This position supports federally funded social science field research through the USDA Forest Service’s National Visitor Use Monitoring (NVUM) Program, under UNH grant AW001286 | GR004817 | Fund 110443. The employee will conduct on-site, face-to-face visitor surveys throughout the White Mountain National Forest. This position is critical to data collection efforts during Summer 2025 and is fully grant-funded. Not considered essential staff.

Duties/Responsibilities

Data Collection in the Field (70%)

  • Conduct visitor intercept surveys at designated sites across the White Mountain National Forest.
  • Follow standardized NVUM protocols to ensure high-quality data collection.
  • Use tablet computers, signage, and uniforms as provided.
  • Accurately record and upload survey data.

Travel and Independent Work (20%)

  • Travel independently to remote field sites across the forest.
  • Work without direct supervision in varied terrain and weather conditions.
  • Maintain communication with the principal investigator and research team.

Equipment Management and Reporting (10%)

  • Manage assigned field equipment and data collection tools.
  • Report survey counts and field notes as instructed.
  • Participate in training sessions prior to fieldwork.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Some experience in customer service, fieldwork, or research is preferred but not required.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who reside in or near the Bartlett or North Conway, NH area, due to the on-site nature of the work.

Required Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid U.S. driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to follow protocols and work independently.
  • Comfort navigating to and working in remote outdoor locations.
  • Basic computer skills; ability to use tablets and enter data.
  • Reliable, courteous, and professional demeanor.

Other Requirements:

  • Must be at least 20 years of age and able to pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with survey research or field data collection.
  • Familiarity with outdoor recreation or public lands.
  • Enrollment or background in natural resources, recreation, or social science.
  • Residency in or near the Bartlett or North Conway, NH area, due to the location-specific nature of the work.
