What is an Academic Preparation & Achievement Teaching Assistant?

APA TAs at the University of Kentucky are individuals who care deeply about students. APA TAs, under the direction of the Associate Director for TL and Assistant Director for APA, support instruction and operations of the Academic Orientation courses (UK 101/201) and/or the Rebound Program courses (UK 105/205). APA TAs are expected to assist in developing curriculum, deliver instruction, engage students in positive classroom management strategies, give timely feedback, and support the growth and development of students.

What are the APA TA Responsibilities?

  • Teaching 1-3 courses (up to 6 credit hours in total)
  • Holding weekly office hours
  • Attending weekly staff meetings
  • 5-10 hours of administrative and programmatic support (e.g. hiring, training, scheduling, assessment, and supervision of peer mentors)
  • Understanding and adherence to University Registrar policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned, for example: contributing to outreach/promotional/marketing efforts of the department

All successful candidates must be available in August for training.

  • A demonstrated track record of helping students to succeed,
  • Excellent executive functioning skills such as time management, listening, communication, data collection, evaluation and analysis.
  • Excellent customer service.
  • Enjoys working in both an individual and team setting.
  • Strong understanding of academic life skills such as learning strategies, time management, growth mindset, getting motivated, & school/work/life integration.
  • Proficient with digital platforms such as MS suite, learning management plateforms (e.g. Canvas), data analysis softwarem etc.
