The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) currently has a vacancy for an unclassified Program Consultant, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection Section, in the Topeka location. The KCC is a multi-faceted agency responsible for regulating public utilities including electric, natural gas, telecommunication and water companies as well as motor carriers, oil and gas pipelines and oil and gas natural production activities. The Commission’s headquarters is in Topeka with the central Conservation office in Wichita and four Conservation district offices located in Dodge City, Wichita, Chanute and Hays.

Position Summary & Responsibilities

Principle Responsibilities include:

  • Represents the consumer in disputes with the utility company, assuring their complaint is taken seriously, investigated thoroughly and treated fairly. This includes interpreting technical tariffs, guidelines, regulations, and policies and applying them to the facts of each individual case.
  • Investigates, collects data and ascertains facts pertaining to claims, appeals, and fraud or consumer rights violations.
  • Documents case files and company violations by entering critical information into a database.
  • Records public comments on pending cases.
  • Educates consumers about their rights and general consumer education regarding utilities issues.
  • Helps plan and staff public hearings and other agency events.
  • Assists with relief phone coverage at the front desk as requested.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Six months of experience responding to consumer inquiries either by phone or in person. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office as well as proficiency in general office practices.
