Position Information

TxDOT's San Antonio District is looking for a Construction Materials Lab Testing Inspector to join our Asphalt Lab Team. Our lab team is responsible to perform testing of materials utilized in the construction of our state highways (e.g. flexible pavement and Hot Mix Asphalt) and ensuring that they meet meet the requirements detailed in TxDOT's Standard Specifications; thus ensuring the quality and longevity of our state's infrastructure.

Annual Salary Range

Material Process Inspector I (B18): $45,521- $71,055

Material Process Inspector II (B19): $48,244- $76,028

Material Process Inspector III (B20): $51,158- $81,351

This position is for a Material Process Inspector I, II or III. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on business needs and the applicants' work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors.

Position Description

Performs complex material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and at points of supply. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:

Material Process Inspector I

  • Coordinates test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors and material producers and suppliers.
  • Investigates compaction problems associated with hot mix asphaltic concrete.
  • Maintains and calibrates equipment.
  • Performs tests and inspection duties.
  • Records test data on worksheets and performs calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement.
  • Secures, logs in and prepares samples of raw materials or manufactured materials at various stages of production for testing.
  • Drives/travels to laboratories, manufacturing plants, points of supply, warehouses and project sites to monitor status of programs
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Material Process Inspector II

In addition to the duties listed above

  • Handles material or production problems referred by less experienced inspectors.
  • Prepares and maintains inspection or test reports and issues material reports.
  • Reviews plans and material specifications for changes in material requirements.

Material Process Inspector III

In addition to the duties listed above

  • Advises supervisor of inspection activities and problems at plants and assists in coordinating inspections.
  • Coordinates test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors, material producers and suppliers and field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems.
  • Records test data on worksheets and performs calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience:

Material Process Inspector I: None Required.

Material Process Inspector II: 1 year of experience in laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering related work.

Material Process Inspector III: 2 years of experience in laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering related work.

(Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • HMA Plant Spec-IA

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise
  • Subject to air and skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and fingers
