Job Overview

Under supervision, inspects construction methods and workmanship to ensure that contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.

Applicants should have experience in construction inspection with an emphasis on transportation projects. The position requires basic familiarity with a broad spectrum of materials, methods, and processes used in the construction of transportation projects. The Construction Inspector II will receive supervision and support from one or more senior field personnel, while beginning to assist and provide support to less experienced inspection staff. The Level II Inspector may be required to perform some supervision over less qualified inspection staff.

Responsibilities will include construction inspection, materials testing, and daily documentation of project activities. Position requires working outside year-round with nights and/or weekends required. Work may require contact with the public.

Duties

  • Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.
  • Reviews plans and specifications to ensure that work is in compliance with same.
  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Reports work progress and discusses construction related problems with supervisor.
  • May train less experienced inspectors.
  • Keep a daily diary of work activities.
  • May complete pay sheets for work completed.
  • May occasionally perform drafting/design or surveying work.
  • Compute and record areas, volumes and cost extensions.
  • Perform intermediate mathematical calculations.
  • Prepare Daily Work Reports in TxDOT Site Manager or Client software.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of construction including materials, methods, plans and specifications; associated safety requirements; design and survey techniques. Some knowledge of algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations; train others; communicate effectively; deal effectively with contractors and the public.
  • Working knowledge of TxDOT construction specifications and standard drawings.
  • Working knowledge of construction materials, methods and procedures; ability to maintain field and office records; ability to perform complex quantity and engineering computations; ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
  • Ability to perform field inspections and materials sampling/testing, to verify the quality of work performed and materials used for conformance with the contract, plans, and specifications.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, plans and project documents.
  • Ability to document deficiencies and deviations from plans and clearly communicate this information to supervisors as they arise.
  • Ability to provide general office administration and preparing a daily work report.
  • Ability to recognize that a problem exists in their area(s) of responsibility, report on the problem, and receive direction from their supervisor.
  • Ability to determine the priority of assignments based on critical deadlines that must be met.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally with contractors, clients and staff.
  • Strong time management and attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Familiar with a Surface Pro and iPad functions and uses.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Will be expected to work hours other than M-F / 8-5 and possibly work in inclement weather conditions.
  • Must be able to stand/sit/walk and lift up to 40 lbs. to perform required duties.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • 2-7 years of construction inspection experience to include roadway (earthwork, subgrade, base, concrete and asphalt pavement, drainage, lighting, guardrail and striping for rehabilitation/new) and/or bridge (drilled shafts, driven piles, reinforcing steel, structural concrete, and bridge decks) elements.
  • High School Diploma
  • Valid Driver’s license and driving record in good standing

Education and Experience

Graduation from high school or equivalent plus 2-7 years’ experience in construction inspection. Related college education or technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. May also required to have or ability to obtain and maintain the following certifications based on assignment:

  • ACI Grade I certification
  • HMAC Level IB certification
  • TxDOT MNT 415, CON 816 and ENV 432 certifications
  • TxDOT SB 102
  • TEEX’s - Barricade Inspection certification

Required Experience

  • Drilled Shaft Inspection
  • Structures Inspection
  • Prior experience on a TxDOT project including working knowledge of the Sitemanager Program
