RESEARCH ENGINEER II - (T227374)
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a RESEARCH ENGINEER II to develop viable mechanical or electrical systems and component designs based on project requirements and specifications for the School of Engineering. To produce the associated engineering drawings and schematics for use in the fabrication and assembly of complex hardware and devices. To review and check engineering drawings produced by others for adherence to technical specifications and requirements. To work with CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering) Mechanical or electrical design software. To demonstrate design experience with high-reliability instruments and work closely with engineers of other disciplines to develop systems.
1. Foundry Operations: Manage the daily operation of the foundry, including casting, melting, molding, safety, and maintenance. Assist in the installation of new equipment and the improvement of the Foundry facility. Ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations. Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for foundry equipment and processes.
2. Educational Support: Assist faculty with course needs and laboratory demonstrations related to metallurgy, casting, and materials processing. Supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in hands-on foundry-related projects and research. Provide technical training and workshops to students and staff.
3. Research and Industry Engagement: Collaborate with faculty and research teams to support sponsored projects and applied research in metal casting and material science and engineering. Coordinate with industry partners on joint research, prototyping, and workforce development initiatives. Conduct research and serve as a technical liaison with funding agencies, foundations, and industry.
4. Community Outreach and Mission Support: Develop and participate in outreach programs to engage local schools, community groups, and different populations in STEM and foundry science and engineering. Represent UAB and the Foundry Facility at conferences, exhibitions, and public events.
5. Perform other duties as assigned.
(Annual Salary: $67,070 - $108,990)
Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related field. Minimum of four (4) years of experience in foundry operations, metal casting, or materials processing. Demonstrated experience working in a collaborative academic, industrial, or research environment. Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience working with students or in an educational setting. Familiarity with research grant reporting and foundation/agency relations. Experience with CAD/CAM/Solid Works software and metallurgical analysis tools.
