Engineering internship: building information modelling for semiconductor fab

ASML

Introduction

Are you familiar with Building Information Modelling (BIM)? Do you have architectural or structural/civil engineering background? Do you have interest in systems thinking? Do you like to work with cross-sector teams thereby enabling broader learning and networking? Then an internship opportunity in the Fab-infra and Pre-install (FIPI) group awaits you!

You will be part of the Fab infra and Pre-install team (FIPI Team) which is a part of Development and Engineering (D&E) sector of ASML. This team strives to deliver with quality and on time to customer the information needed to design, build and qualify the factory (building, utilities, etc.) needed to house an ASML machine. This information (over 30.000 data elements) is actively collected from the cross-functional teams designing the (new) ASML machines. It is very important that the information is complete, correct and consistent.

Your Assignment:

As an intern, you will work with cross-disciplined team such as flow and thermal, electrical layout, structural engineering, supplier teams to develop Building Information Modelling (BIM) to make the customer fab more efficient and cost effective. You will not only be able to learn and work on the processes that enable the design and production of advanced ASML photolithography systems, but also understand the facility requirements needed to house and operate this system at different geographical locations. This facility requirement includes water, vacuum, electrical, and structural engineering of the system. An intern will get a broad exposure of what goes into making ASML system and also the complexity of the fabs that uses these systems.

An intern in the FIPI team, in collaboration with competence lead (CL) and project lead (PL):

  • Has to work closely with a coach/team lead to clearly set up the internship objectives;
  • Has to understand the group's business needs;
  • Translate business needs to competence goals;
  • Has to develop clear plans with milestones to achieve the competence goals;
  • Has to identify critical stakeholders across teams to enable the success of the goals;
  • Has to set up meetings to enable communication of our competence goals to identified stakeholders;
  • Communicate periodically the roadblocks in achieving the agreed milestones to the coach, CL, and PL, and also the FIPI group lead;
  • Communicate lessons learnt to the whole FIPI team in group meetings;
  • Deliver a new training curriculum for the pre-install stakeholders;
  • Deliver GID (general information document) for IRM (installation requirements manual) and PIM (Pre-install Manual).

This is a bachelor's/master's level internship for minimum 6 months (with an option to extend) for full time (5 days minimum). Starting in September 2025.

Your profile

To be a good fit for this internship, you are a bachelor's/master's level (preferred) student in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, structural engineering, or architecture engineering discipline. Additionally, you also have:

  • Knowledge in BIM modelling software such as Revit, Navisworks ArchiCAD (nice to have);
  • Programming experience is a plus (C# and, or Python);
  • Exhibit curiosity to learn;
  • Proactive mentality where you will be part of a dynamic team;
  • Have the confidence to ask questions and make mistakes;
  • Good communication skills to share ideas and also to gather relevant feedback.

Other requirements you need to meet

  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;
  • You are located in the Netherlands to perform your internship. In case you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate;
  • If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement)
