Position Overview:

The Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL) at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a motivated undergraduate-level intern with a strong foundation in data science and computer programming. This internship offers a hands-on opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research infrastructure by working on experiments controlled by the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS). EPICS is a software framework that enables communication between hardware and control systems and is widely used in large-scale scientific experiments. This project is ideal for students interested in control systems, instrumentation, or scientific computing and offers real-world experience at the intersection of physics and software engineering. The selected intern will assist in the development of a general user interface (GUI) and help design an EPICS-based interlock system for the MSD soft X-ray group.

Specific responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

  • Explaining the use of the EPICS system for X-ray science.
  • Identifying requirements for implementing a general user interface (GUI) concept through EPICS under the guidance of scientists.
  • Demonstrating the developed GUI with the beamline hardware.
  • Assist in designing experimental requirements.

Note: This is an hourly, non-benefits eligible temporary-nonexempt, internship position (work at 50% full-time equivalent or more), not to exceed 980 hours in six consecutive months. Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years of age, currently enrolled in an educational program or recently graduated, and have US work authorization. The on-site internship program is for a period of eight weeks and takes place between May and Mid-August, with the start date being contingent on the convenience of the candidate.

  • Pursuing a Master's or Doctoral degree in a science, engineering or equivalent discipline.

  • Some prior experience at Python programming would be beneficial.

The expected pay range for this position is $ 26.68 - $38.11 per hour. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
