The Indiana University (IU) Center for Rural Engagement improves the lives of Hoosiers through collaborative initiatives that discover and deploy scalable and flexible solutions to common challenges facing rural communities. Working in full-spectrum community innovation through research, community-engaged teaching, and student service, the Center builds vision, harnesses assets, and cultivates sustainable leadership structures within the communities with which it engages to ensure long-term success.

Job Summary

As part of the Rural Scholars Program, the IU Center for Rural Engagement seeks a student for a project-based internship in partnership with the Southwestern Indiana Citizens for Quality of Life (SWICQL).

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Conduct interviews with members of SWICQL and Valley Watch regarding the impact of environmental campaigns on human and environmental health.
  • Conduct independent research on historical changes in the southern Indiana bioregion and effects of industrial development and policy.
  • Create a final report for publication.
  • Create a final presentation to share with community members.

  • Currently enrolled as a student at Indiana University

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without accommodation.

Work Location

Bloomington, Indiana

This position is eligible to work a hybrid schedule (a mix of remote and in-person work), which may change in the future based on university policy and business needs. 

Advertised Salary

$15.00 per hour, eligible for $0.50 raise each academic semester (Fall/Spring).

Work Hours

8-10 hours per week

August-May
