Moderna’s Cloud Engineering and Operations organization is at the forefront of transforming our enterprise use of the Cloud, ensuring secure, scalable, and reliable digital infrastructure. As a Site Reliability Engineer, you will be instrumental in bridging traditional IT infrastructure with modern cloud technologies, providing hands-on technical expertise, and driving automation to optimize stability and cost-efficiency. You will collaborate closely with internal engineering teams and business stakeholders to enhance our cloud-based and on-premises infrastructure.

We are seeking an experienced and strategic problem-solver who thrives in fast-paced environments, maintains a sense of urgency, and has a passion for automation. This role requires a proactive individual who can mentor junior engineers, troubleshoot complex challenges, and contribute to the ongoing evolution of Moderna’s digital ecosystem.

Here’s What You’ll Do

Your key responsibilities will be:

  • Lead team projects, mentor engineers (as applicable), and contribute to team architecture decisions.
  • Define and implement resilient, high-performance, and scalable infrastructure solutions.
  • Troubleshoot complex system challenges and decompose them into manageable tasks.
  • Establish and enforce engineering, testing, and operational excellence standards.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation (24x7x365) to support Moderna’s business operations.
  • Collaborate across organizations to enhance supportability and maintainability of cloud platforms.
  • Execute change requests and planned modifications to maintain the environment.

Your responsibilities will also include:

  • Advocating for best engineering practices, including coding standards, reviews, CI/CD pipelines, and automation.
  • Driving cost-optimization strategies while maintaining high availability.
  • Engaging in full-stack cloud and infrastructure design, ensuring seamless integration with internal systems.
  • Producing technical documentation on system architectures, workflows, and best practices.

Here’s What You’ll Need (Basic Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related technology or scientific field OR 5 years of equivalent professional experience in lieu of a degree.
  • 3+ years of programming experience with at least one modern language, such as Python, Ruby, PowerShell, etc.
  • 4+ years of job-related experience in a non-internship role.
  • 2+ years of experience designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems.
  • Experience with modern full-stack software applications both built or off the shelf.
  • Experience documenting technical systems, user workflows, and user requirements.
  • Experience with traditional IT infrastructure as well as the Cloud, preferably AWS.

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Experience leading the design, build, and deployment of complex and performant (reliable and scalable) software/system solutions in a production environment.
  • Experience taking a leading role in building complex software or computing infrastructure that has been successfully delivered to customers.
  • Knowledge of and advocation of engineer practices and patterns for the full life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and production operations.
