A Day in Your Life at MKS:

As a Sr. Laser and Optics Engineer at MKS/ESI, you will work on the design and development of laser based optical systems in a fast-paced, technically challenging, multi-disciplinary environment. Move tasks from concept to design and follow through to successful implementation. In this role, you will report to the Director of Engineering, Laser and Optics.

You Will Make an Impact By:

  • Creating optical design solutions, building prototypes, and validating designs for use in the MKS/ESI line of products.
  • Developing, implementing, and documenting procedures and methods.
  • Specifying and qualifying lasers and optical components/subsystems, maintaining relationships with suppliers.
  • Interacting with cross-functional teams to assist in overall system development and troubleshooting.
  • Confering with product marketing on writing of functional specifications.
  • Overseeing engineering life cycle of products including architecture, design, and implementation.
  • Travel Requirements: Up to 10% of Travel is required

Skills You Bring:

  • Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, or equivalent in the field of Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Optical Engineering with at least 5 years of related experience.
  • Experience with solid state, gas, or fiber lasers is required. Experience with lasers operating at wavelength from UV through IR and pulse width from nanosecond to ultrafast is highly desired. Experience with CO2 lasers is a plus.
  • Experience with designing, building, and testing lasers as well as optical components and systems is required. 
  • Experience with laser some measurement equipment - power sensors, beam profilers, oscilloscopes, pulse detectors, etc., as well as optical measurement and methods is required.
  • Experience with optical systems, optical alignment methods, and optical design programs such as Zemax or Code V is highly desired.
  • Ability to complete complex tasks on schedule while delivering quality output with a minimum amount of supervision.
  • Ability to multitask, work on a team, and prioritize.
  • Strong business, analytic, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Motivated, self-driven, positive approach to problem solving.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions: 

  • Perform activities such as sitting, standing, or typing for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs
  • Regularly requires good manual dexterity and coordination
  • Occasionally moves/positions objects up to 50 lbs
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards including handling mechanical and electrical hardware, high voltage, gas, water, and heat
