The LVMPD is an EEO employer and maintains a drug-free workplace.

Position Description

This recruitment is specifically meant for current college student applicants desiring to obtain an internship with the Detention Services Division of LVMPD. Applications not directed at detention services will be rejected. Applications may be submitted for LVMPD Intern (C25-005) for all other areas within LVMPD.

LVMPD internships are unpaid volunteer positions. LVMPD internships are offered only to current college students, not granted to individuals merely wanting to obtain work experience, and must be performed in return for college credits toward graduation. Internships are generally performed on a part time basis, for instance, 20 hours per week, within one semester. No free housing is offered, regardless of whether the successful candidate is an out-of-state student.

Interns have no law enforcement power. They are students currently in an advanced stage of their college studies desiring to pursue a career in criminal justice or law enforcement upon college graduation. Typically assigned a mentor, interns acquire the necessary knowledge and skills while providing non-commissioned, non-hazardous support and/or research services to the LVMPD unit assigned.

Minimum Qualifications/Position-Specific Conditions

Internship applicants must:

  1. Be endorsed by the college/university for the proposed internship.
  2. Be age 18 or above.
  3. Be a United States citizen or lawful permanent resident alien.
  4. Be a current student of good academic standing, with a 2.75 GPA or higher, enrolled in an accredited United States college/university that offers credits counted towards graduation for completing an internship with a law enforcement or criminal justice agency.
  5. Have already completed the first year in an Associate's degree program or the second year in a Bachelor's degree program; or currently be pursuing a Master's degree.
  6. Be able to work a minimum of eight hours per week.
  7. Be available to travel to Las Vegas at their own expense for an in-person background interview (out-of-area applicants).

Position-specific Condition

Interns may be required to work nights and weekends, depending on assignment.

Best Candidates Will have already committed to majoring in Criminal Justice, Police Science, Social Work, Corrections or a related field.

Due to limited availability, internships are rarely offered to applicants not majoring in the above fields.

Selection Process

  1. Minimum qualifications screening.
  2. Meeting with a background investigator at LVMPD Headquarters, Las Vegas at the student applicant's expense. Out of state applicants are advised to take the time and expense involved in this process into consideration.
  3. Background investigation lasting 90 days in most cases.**
  4. Candidates notified of background investigation results.
  • No intern candidates are exempted from the background process, regardless of their previous employment with the military or any jurisdiction. Out of state applicants must take the above into consideration before they apply, so that their graduation requirements can be met.

At this time, the LVMPD does not hire intern applicants on a provisional hire basis. Therefore, all background requirements must be completed prior to the start of the internship.

  • Due to security reasons, personal belongings permitted in the facility will be limited. Items such as large backpacks, briefcases, duffle bags or similar items may not be allowed. Those items permitted will be left to the discretion of the LVMPD employees conducting the process and may be subject to a search.

Additional Selection Processes

The background investigation takes approximately 90 to 120 days to complete. You must also meet the LVMPD Hiring Standards. For more information on the background process, click http://www.lvmpd.com/en-us/ProtectTheCity/Pages/EmploymentStandards.aspx
