About this role

Dow Coating Materials (DCM) has an enticing opportunity for a Senior Technical Service & Development (TS&D) Leader based in Collegeville, PA. The successful candidate will manage a team of TS&D scientists within DCM focused on enabling innovation and facilitating adoption of Dow’s architectural coatings products at customers in North America. The team has responsibility for both specific account activity (Account TS&D) and for broad market development project (Broad Market TS&D). The Senior Leader will enable the productivity and efficiency of their team, and work to enable their connectivity and impact with the commercial team and our customers. The Senior Leader will have accountability for project resourcing and assuring alignment of team member activities with the broader goals of the organization.

General Responsibilities / Duties

  • Lead the Technical Service and Development team that is accountable for delivering product recommendations, paint formulation guidance, and general support for customers working to adopt and use Dow’s innovative, high performing products developed for the North American architectural coating’s customer segment.
  • Collaborate cross functionally within the DCM business to support the definition of market and customer strategies, leading preparation for critical meetings including broad market project updates, innovation sessions and project prioritization.
  • Participate in customer meetings and cultivate collaborative relationships with technical leaders at key innovation partners to reinforce Dow as their preferred collaborator.

Specific responsibilities and expertise required as Senior Leader for Application R&D:

  • Manages day-to-day supervision of direct reports and acts accountable for performance management, team building, and reward and recognition.
  • Identifies talent, accountable for attraction and retention within the department, and cultivates a high performing team focused on delivery against research goals and customer requests.
  • Provides guidance and support to Account TS&D leaders to assure delivery of solutions to Dow’s customers that are aligned with business objectives and customer strategies.
  • In collaboration with sales counterparts, develops, manages, and prioritizes a project portfolio for short term customer activities that is consistent with lead and opportunity metrics and business strategy.
  • In collaboration with marketing counterparts Develops, manages, and prioritizes a project portfolio for long term activities that addresses current and emerging market needs.
  • Drive preparation of customer account summaries and strategies for internal stakeholder awareness.
  • Prepare and deliver executive summaries of project activities and customer activities for internal stakeholders including technical implications and financial impact.
  • Drives the TS&D team’s adoption and utilization of DCM’s industry leading capabilities including Paint Vision, our Exposure Sites and data, and high throughput research in order to progress customer projects, leads and opportunities, and longer market studies.
  • Networks and collaborates with other business and technical groups within Dow to support existing products/projects and to generate and exploit new ideas and opportunities.
  • Participate in Market Implementation Team meetings and proactively collaborate with commercial and marketing function to assure productive meetings.
  • Responsibility for Safety behaviors and performance of the team.
  • Develops and manages laboratory capital.
  • Ensure technical work is being appropriately documented.
  • Manage the group’s controllable expenses within the agreed budget.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or science-related field. 
  • At least 4 years of experience in research, application development, product development, and technical service and development roles with a track record for project leadership and delivery.
  • Experience in leading individuals, people leaders and teams, from a position of influence.
  • Demonstrated ability to build a culture of safety, inclusion, and innovation.
  • Experience in customer interface and establishing strategic relationship with stakeholders.
  • Ability to influence across organizational & functional boundaries, business acumen and strong networking & communication skills.
  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Desirable: 

  • Previous experience in relevant market segments for DCM including architectural or industrial coatings.
  • PhD. in a related technical field such as Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, or science-related field. 
  • At least 4 years of experience in technical roles in DCM including architectural or industrial coatings.
