Duties and Responsibilities

The internship is located in the Geospatial Analysis and Programme Delivery Section (GPS), Research and Analysis Branch (RAB), Division for Public Affairs (DPA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Vienna (Austria). The intern will work under the direct supervision of Professional staff of the section. The selected intern will report to the Research Officer responsible for research on the illicit tobacco trade, Geospatial Analysis and Programme Delivery Section (GPS), with guidance from Data Analytics and Statistics Section (DASS). The intern will focus on the creation of a global tobacco seizures database, which was piloted last year. This task will involve the identification, processing, validation and de-duplication of individual seizure events. These seizure incidents will be derived from web-scraping, seizures made by agencies associated with the UNODC Passenger and Cargo Border Team, and official sources. The work will include enhancing design of the database, coding procedures for incorporation of data in different formats, and recruitment of new data. It is intended that the final product be used to monitor the development of the global illicit market and to understand the impact of policy interventions. Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. Studies in the field of social sciences, criminology, epidemiology, statistics, economics, data science, information technology, mathematics or equivalent are required. Ability to interact diplomatically with national enforcement and statistical agencies is required. Knowledge of R, Python, Stata and MS Access is desirable. Experience with public health statistical data is desirable. Experience with web scraping data is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
