JOB SUMMARY 

The Senior Officer, Biomedical Engineering ensures all machines are operational in the hospital and develop SoPs for maintenance of all high value medical equipment. The position will support the hospital administration in the operationalization of the equipment by developing/adapting guidelines for equipment maintenance and recommending supplies for use with the machine. The Senior Officer supports and trains the staff in proper use of the equipment.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supports patient diagnosis and treatment by installing, testing, calibrating, and repairing biomedical equipment; training users; maintaining safe operations.
  • Approves new equipment by conducting tests, ensuring adherence to codes, and making modifications.
  • Installs new equipment by establishing, adjusting, calibrating, and testing performance.
  • Maintains equipment by completing preventive maintenance schedules, conducting tests, and troubleshooting and repairing malfunctions.
  • Calls for special equipment service, evaluates service contracts and maintains equipment inventories.
  • Directs biomedical equipment operation by providing equipment operation demonstrations, instructing other healthcare staff in use and care of equipment and answering questions.
  • Evaluates proposed equipment by conducting tests and evaluations.
  • Improves equipment performance by studying machine-patient interaction, conferring with equipment users, developing modifications, and collaborating with manufacturers.
  • Maintains supplies inventory by checking stock, anticipating needs, placing and expediting orders, and verifying receipt.
  • Prepares biomedical reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Maintains patient confidence by keeping information confidential.
  • Maintains safe and healthy working environment by conducting safety tests, recommending and complying with procedures, training and guiding medical and healthcare personnel and complying with codes.
  • Train health staff in the required routine care for biomedical equipment and develop simple maintenance plans for the equipment. 
  • Check on the equipment warranty and ensure the supplier complies with the warranties as agreed upon.
  • Any other support may be required by the hospital management and senior program officer.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering or related field required, master’s degree preferred.
  • At least four years of related experience required.
  • Familiarity with international humanitarian operations, coordination structures, and the mandates of donors. 
  • Cross-cultural awareness and insight into health care issues 
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data and to track performance against program indicators. 
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions with limited supervision. 
  • Extremely flexible and can cope with stressful situations and frustrations. 
  • Ability to relate to and motivate local staff effectively. 
  • Creative and able to work with limited resources. 
  • Team player and strong communication skills, both oral and written, local languages as required.
  • Proficient in computer applications, especially with MS Word and MS Excel, MS PowerPoint a plus
