Scientist/Senior Scientist, Structural Biology/Biochemistry

TERREMOTO

Position Description:

We are seeking an independent, highly motivated Scientist/Senior Scientist with deep expertise in protein science, structural biology, and biochemistry to join our biology drug discovery team and contribute to our rapidly expanding portfolio of drug discovery programs. You will play a critical role in establishing our internal gene-to-structure core capability and in determining co-structures of small molecules with our protein targets of interest. You will design and implement biochemical assays to identify, validate and characterize small molecule inhibitors. You will also develop a broad understanding of other disciplines involved in drug discovery and development by working closely with an experienced cross-functional team to advance programs rapidly into the clinic.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Generate protein-small molecule and protein-protein complex X-ray crystal structures by performing all relevant steps of the gene-to-structure process, including construct design, expression, purification, characterization, crystallization, and structure determination.
  • Manage CROs for gene synthesis, protein production and other tasks as required.
  • Arrange data collection, processing, and structure refinement at synchrotron facilities or with CRO partners.
  • Develop and implement a wide range of biochemical methods to investigate the potency, selectivity, and kinetics of small molecule inhibitors.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in biology, chemical biology, computational chemistry, and medicinal chemistry to accelerate hit-finding, hit-to-lead and lead-optimization campaigns.
  • Maintain excellent record keeping and communication among internal and external colleagues.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • PhD in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Structural Biology or a related discipline or MS with a minimum of four years of experience working in a biotech/pharma setting preferred.
  • Proficient in recombinant protein expression from different systems, like insect and bacteria. Extensive hands-on experience with protein purification including affinity-tag, IEX, and SEC.
  • Demonstrated track record of generating high-quality recombinant protein for applications in structural biology, biophysics, or assay development.
  • Experienced in crystallization of protein-small molecule complexes and high-resolution X-ray structure determination, refinement, and visualization.
  • In-depth knowledge of biochemical assay development utilizing a variety of readouts such as TR-FRET, AlphaLISA, HTRF, FP.
  • Self-motivated and able to work both independently and collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Experience in other structural biology (Cryo-EM, NMR) or biochemical/biophysical methods or DNA encoded library screening is a plus.
  • The anticipated salary range for candidates who will work in South San Francisco, CA is $135,000 to $150,000. The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience within the job, type, and length of experience within the industry, education, etc. Terremoto Biosciences, is a multi-state employer and this salary range may not reflect positions that work only in other states.
