Role: Mechanical Development Engineer Location: Utrecht, Netherlands

Job Description

What you will be doing as a Packaging Innovation Engineer :

In this position you will be responsible for driving the engineering aspect of packaging innovation projects, from concept and development through verification and validation and on to implementation. This includes design, development, prototyping with packaging vendors, testing/verification and technical report writing. You have the ability to project manage external resources and suppliers as required. You will ensure that all documentations are to Diversey standards, and all development work is fully documented working within the quality system.

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, curious individual that can work with a wide variety of technical challenges. individual in this position will work within the team to identify and explore innovative solutions to solve specific customer needs in the cleaning and hygiene industry.

The individual will work within a team and explore a variety of innovation areas including sustainable solutions. This position will work with both internal and external technologies and will work within a team made up of Innovation engineers, packaging engineers and development engineers, and will collaborate with scientists and chemists. The individual must have a passion for innovation and a curiosity to explore solutions

Duties & Responsibilities

The Principle Duties :

  • Be leading in creative design processes for innovation projects in the field of packaging solutions for cleaning and hygiene solutions with a focus on sustainability.
  • Work on global innovations both internally invented and utilizing external technologies.
  • Work with Open Innovation Lead to explore external technology opportunities.
  • Cooperate within multifunctional projects. Interact with Marketing and Supply chain to extract all requirements relevant to the technical design.
  • Collaborate with Development Engineers on the Design and Development of parts and assemblies and production of
  • associated specification documents/drawings using CAD tools.
  • Work with our production partners to bring concepts into first series and final production moulds.
  • Ensuring that systems are designed and developed with the appropriate attention to detail and quality levels.
  • Responsible for creation of test requirements, test protocols and definition of test equipment.
  • Accountable for the verification and validation of packaging solutions against the agreed requirements.
  • Responsible for building early prototypes (with proto machines and in workshop) and testing the parts or systems in a lab environment, evaluating and iterating on the design until the team is satisfied with the robustness and quality of the system.
  • Together with supply chain colleagues, assessment of suppliers to evaluate fit with project and product requirements.
  • Accurate and detailed report writing on evaluation of existing samples and field returns and an ability to provide innovative solutions to issues that may arise.
  • Mentor and coach (junior) engineers.
  • Work and liaise with suppliers and internal groups as needed during the development phase of a project to ensure quality levels and adequate control are maintained through the development process.

The Individual

Basic Qualifications :

  • Master’s degree with minimum 3 years of experience, or Bachelor with minimum 5 years of experience in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design Engineering or similar.
  • 3-5 years of experience within an engineering or design team and with external partners in a similar subject area.
  • CAD Skills, preferably Solid works
  • Detailed understanding of packaging manufacturing processes and materials (bottles, blow molded and injection molded, flexible films and dispensing spouts/caps) and filling techniques.
  • Knowledge of packaging regulations and accreditation
  • Tolerance Stack analysis
  • Experience of project management processes and working with external design resources.
  • Good management skills to prioritise work and ensure timely delivery of projects.
  • Proven project delivery record.
  • Creative and innovative.
  • Good team working and communication skills.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Willing to travel in Europe and outside Europe if needed.
  • Hands on / prototyping skills
  • Detailed understanding of and experience with plastics manufacturing processes, such as injection moulding

Additional Qualifications :

  • Knowledge and experience in sustainable packaging technologies including bioplastics and compostable materials.
  • Knowledge of certifications related to circular packaging.
  • Design for Lean Six Sigma.
  • Knowledge of water regulations.
  • Knowledge and experience in fluid pumping and dispensing systems.
  • Knowledge of mechatronics/electronics (sensors, PLC & micro controllers, IoT).
  • Experience with plastic materials.
  • Experience with fluidics.
  • Experience with chemical compatibility and chemical interaction.
