Position Title: High School Student: DSP Intern Location: Varies

Reports To: Day Service Supervisor/Program Manager Cost Center: Varies

General Purpose: In a few brief sentences summarize the primary duties and responsibilities.

A Direct Support Professional (DSP) supports people who have Intellectual / Developmental Disabilities and / or Autism Spectrum Disorder to increase their independence, daily living skills, and empowers them to obtain their goals. A DSP uses person centered thinking and approaches to provide daily support to people in decision making, community integration, and in obtaining paid employment. DSP Intern would be assigned to assist a DSP and provide additional support. A DSP intern can be assigned various tasks such as lesson plan development, research and coordinating activities, general program maintenance and administrative duties. A DSP intern can conduct presentations under DSP supervision to the people we support in our programs. This is an unpaid internship for high school students looking for credit/experience in the human services field. 

Essential Functions: Describe the intrinsic job duties that define the core responsibilities of the job. 

  • DSP Intern would provide technical/administrative assistance to DSP through preparing materials for group activities, verifying attendance sheets, making photocopies, complete group sheets/lesson plan templates etc. 
  • DSP Intern would provide additional teaching, support, and learning interventions to individuals that may need further 1:1 tutoring.
  • DSP Intern would provide assistance to maintain engagement in group activities. 
  • DSP Intern would assist in general program maintenance and events/activities coordination. 

Other regular responsibilities: May include but not limited to 

  • Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements: Describe the skills, knowledge and abilities required. Include minimum educational and experience requirements and preferences.

  • Must be able to read and write in English.
  • Must be able to utilize technology i.e basic typing skills and accessing websites.
  • Must be able to with or without training to utilize Microsoft Applications i.e Outlook, MSteams, Power Point etc. 

Scope of Responsibility & Positions Supervised: Where applicable describes level of authority, decision making discretion, consequences of actions, supervisory and fiscal responsibility. Provide metrics where possible. Level of supervision received.

  • DSP Intern would report to site supervisor and be paired with a DSP.
  • DSP Intern would be supervised by DSP at all times. 

Special Working Conditions: Describe unusual working conditions or environmental factors.

  • Field based, frequent engagement in the community/outdoors required.
  • Ability to stand, bend and ambulate with or without assistance self-sufficiently.
  • Ability to travel on public transportation (transportation fare provided).
