The role: 

Our Interstate Bridge Replacement Program (IBR) is recruiting for a senior design engineer! In this role, you will be the senior engineer and expert designer on a team of employees, designing and providing consulting and mentoring for the transportation design portion of contract development and plans for our program. Apply today!

IBR is a multimodal mega program jointly led by the State of Oregon and the State of Washington to address regional safety and mobility problems facing the I-5 highway system crossing over the Columbia River between Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington. We are working with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), Tri-Met, CTRAN, regional partners, and the community to develop solutions for seismic resiliency, safety improvements, congestion reduction, reliable transit, active transportation and reliable movement of freight.

The person in this position will be a State of Oregon employee. This position is based in Portland, Oregon, and the work location will be at our joint office in Vancouver, Washington.

A day in the life:

  • Ensure project plans and specifications are clear and provide a readily constructible project, working in concert with our management team.
  • Ensure appropriate and adequate technical and design staffing/resourcing for the program, including transportation planning, design, cost estimates and specifications.
  • Advise our management team with program specific technical guidance and provide expertise to staff, regions, headquarters, transportation partners and their personnel.
  • Incorporate equity and climate lens in the design process and outcomes.
  • Review work to meet project milestones and advise a team of engineers on the highest priority and highest risk projects.
  • Review plans for compliance with state and federal design standards and serve as the engineer of record on projects.
  • Develop and revise interchange designs.
  • Present training classes, workshops or conferences and serve as a consultant to management on statewide committees and represent the agency on professional committees and task forces with other state agencies.
  • Respond as the primary contact for program questions related to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), pedestrian crossings, truck turning, traffic calming and other urban related engineering.
  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors with hybrid work options available - the frequency of remote work depends on business needs and will be determined between the hiring manager and the successful candidate at the time of hire.
  • Travel required between ODOT and WSDOT projects and offices as needed; occasional overnight travel may be necessary.

Minimum qualifications:

A valid Professional Engineer's (PE) license in civil, structural, or transportation-related engineering and three (3) years of journey level professional engineer experience.

Note: Three (3) years of journey level professional engineer experience is considered licensed experience only. If registered in another state, successful applicants will be required to obtain professional registration in Oregon within six months of hire.

  • Experience working on roadway and highway design.
  • Experience with developing final plans sets (PS&E) and coordinating with construction.
  • Experience working with travel demand modeling, traffic and safety analysis, and traffic modeling and simulation.
  • Experience working as a team player on a multi-discipline, multi-agency program including the demonstrated ability to coordinate between various teams and agencies.
  • Experience working and leading tasks on a fast-paced and high-profile program.
