The Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer for Beckman Coulter Diagnostics is responsible for mechanical and system design, construction, and debugging of prototype laboratory medical devices.

This position is part of the Hematology and Urinalysis Business Unit located in Miami, FL and will be an Onsite roleAt Beckman Coulter, our vision is to relentlessly reimagine healthcare, one diagnosis at a time.

You will be a part of the Research and Innovation team and report to the Senior Director of Research and Innovation, and you’ll be responsible for research, design, and deployment of prototype laboratory medical devices for the Hematology product line. You’ll be the involved in multidiscipline efforts where you will focus on mechatronics, fluidics, opto-mechanical and electro-mechanical design. You will closely collaborate with other hardware engineers, system engineers, scientists, and technicians to explore opportunities in innovation and development. If you thrive in a collaborative and fast-paced role and want to work to build a world-class R&D organization—read on.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Work with cutting edge technology and help the team in the execution of creative ideas.
  • Design, build and test modules and full systems to show feasibility and retire technical risks of novel technologies and approaches for our next generation hematology and urinalysis instrumentation.
  • Work closely with a multidisciplined research and innovation team in executing experiments and documenting results. 
  • Identify opportunities and bring ideas to the table.
  • Keep up with the latest developments in laboratory instrumentation and leverage them in prototype instrumentation. 

The essential requirements of the job include:

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, and 14 years of proven experience in Mechanical and System design or master’s degree and 12 years of proven experience in Systems and Mechanical design, or Ph.D. and 9 years of proven experience in Systems and Mechanical design.
  • Strong hands-on skills in mechanical and systems design, detailed knowledge of fluidic designs, and solid understanding of optical and electronic design principals.
  • Experience designing, assembling, and testing laboratory instrumentation. 
  • Skills in strategic thinking, problem-solving, logical reasoning, and time management. Detail oriented with excellent analytical and organizational skills. 
  • Enthusiasm and passion for technology and innovation. Be open-minded and innovative. 

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:

  • Domain knowledge in in-vitro diagnostics, especially Hematology.
  • Experience in medical device development under FDA regulations.
  • Experience with computer vision systems.
