We are seeking a passionate Engineer with experience in the built environment to join our Engineering team. As a member of the Building Performance Management Group you will work with some of the world’s most innovative companies, helping them achieve their sustainability and decarbonization goals. You will support Stok team members tracking and managing energy and water consumption in high performance buildings, through Monitoring-Based Commissioning (MBCx) projects, LEED and ILFI Zero Net Energy and Zero Carbon certification projects, building and portfolio level data validation, analysis, and visualization.

This is an excellent early level role for candidates who have a background in the built environment and who are highly motivated to apply their skills and grow within the field of sustainability. Role Responsibilities

  • Data Gathering & Analytics
  • Gather, review and analyze project design and construction information from various sources such as architectural and Mechanical/Electrical/Plumbing (MEP) building drawings, building equipment Sequence of Operations (SOO) and shop drawings/submittals.
  • Gather, review and analyze project energy and water performance data from various sources such as utility company, Energy Star Portfolio Manager (ESPM), building management or automation systems (BMS/BAS), energy management platforms, dashboard platforms.
  • Process, analyze and validate data to confirm accuracy. Utilize critical thinking skills to understand and communicate the energy implications of the data.
  • Create monthly or quarterly reports for clients including findings and recommendations.
  • Metering & Monitoring Strategies
  • Provide submetering and monitoring design strategies for new or existing buildings to support client sustainability goals by:
  • Reading MEP drawings to Identify fuel sources, end uses and circuits/panels/equipment to monitor.
  • Conducting site surveys to assess opportunities for submetering and energy monitoring
  • Coordinate metering and monitoring requirements through design, construction and occupancy phases to support client goals. This may include:
  • Attending design and construction meetings (virtually)
  • Periodic review of drawing sets to confirm submetering and monitoring strategy is properly coordinated between disciplines and achieves client goals.
  • Review of submetering and monitoring equipment shop drawings/submittals.
  • Support for submeter startup and Commissioning of MBCx / M&V equipment.
  • Support for integration of metering equipment into Building Automation System (BAS) or third-party monitoring system, as applicable.
  • Energy Management for Sustainability/Decarbonization Goals
  • Track building performance through occupancy in support of any of the following sustainability goals:
  • ZNE Verification
  • LEED MBCx
  • Zero Carbon
  • GHG Reduction/Reporting
  • ESG Reporting
  • Other client stated sustainability goals
  • As required, during occupancy phase, coordinate with building Operations & Maintenance staff and service contractors to address any issues identified in monthly/quarterly data analytics.
  • Identifying project progress towards to goals and provide recommended measures to achieve
  • Third-Party Certification Documentation
  • Write LEED Monitoring Based Commissioning (MBCx) / Measurement and Verification (M&V) Plans
  • Document ZNE Verification for either LEED, ILFI or other third-party certifications
  • General Tasks
  • Communicate with clients
  • Maintain currency in this specialty: Train and learn various software packages as required to support analysis needs; train and re-train rating system requirements as needed.
  • Travel, as needed with valid driver’s license, personal vehicle and insurance.

Qualifications

What you’ll need to be successful in this role:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or a related applied science discipline
  • 2+ years of experience in building design/construction industry.
  • Proficiency in reading and understanding architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and controls drawings.
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills including listening effectively and soliciting input from others.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office suite of software applications.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data analysis and manipulation of large data sets.
  • Strong analytic skills and ability to consume complex information to make recommendations, priorities and trade-offs optimized to meet business demands and customer needs.
  • Ability to build strong interpersonal relationships within the design and construction team.
  • Organizational skills including, but not limited to, the ability to handle multiple demands and assignments, the ability to prioritize tasks effectively and efficiently, and the ability to manage available resources.
  • Familiarity with applicable design standards for building systems.
  • Passion for climate action.
  • Innate drive to learn and develop new competencies.
  • Demonstrated expertise in applying best practices for data cleaning, gap-filling, validation, and estimation across large and complex datasets.
  • Demonstrated experience in independently developing data analyses to identify key takeaways, develop compelling visualizations, and clearly communicate results.
  • Strong analytical skills, and understanding of data analysis workflows, statistical techniques, and data communication to non-technical audiences.
  • Clear and professional writing for reports and presentations.
  • Willingness to be proactive, take initiative, speak up, ask questions, solicit feedback, and request support when needed.
  • Ability to take direction, work independently, and be a team member.
  • A team player that gets the job done and sees no task as too small.

Additional experience we’d be excited for you to bring:

  • Understanding of engineering principles associated with the analysis of energy-savings measures
  • LEED AP, EIT, and/or P.E.
  • Demonstrated experience automating routine data cleaning and/or analysis tasks.
  • Proficiency in data analytics and visualization.
  • Project management experience.

At this time, Stok will not require any employee to be in an office through the end of 2024, but our offices are open for team members to collaborate. Preference will be given to those located near our San Diego Regional Office in Solana Beach. Other main Stok offices are in San Francisco and Denver. We are also willing to consider this role being fully remote for the right candidate.

COMPENSATION RANGE: $70,000 - $110,000

Compensation will be dependent on years of relevant experience and/or demonstrated expertise in subject area.
