Internship Overview:

Under directive supervision, Intern will have the opportunity to performing preventative maintenance, inspections and basic repairs on utility Duke Energy vehicles and equipment.

Internship Responsibilities:

  • Perform maintenance on;
  • passenger cars
  • pickup trucks
  • SUVs
  • medium and heavy trucks
  • trailers
  • off-road equipment
  • Assist higher classification of technicians with PM’s on all vehicles and equipment
  • Maintain the appropriate level of technical competence required to diagnose and repair vehicles/equipment
  • Maintain general housekeeping (i.e. regularly cleaning garage area, emptying trash, washing equipment, etc.)
  • Perform garage compliance and safety inspections
  • Shuttle parts and equipment between garages and vendors
  • Other non-technical duties as assigned by supervision.

Internship Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled and pursuing an Associates Degree
  • Valid North Carolina Class C drivers license
  • Ability to perform minor vehicle checks
  • Pass OSHA tire service training course
  • Ability to operate forklifts or be certified to do so within 90-120 days
  • High School graduate or GED equivalent

Internship Desired Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an Associates Degree in Automotive Science or related discipline
  • Certificate in auto, diesel, or heavy equipment mechanics from a vocational school
  • Experience cleaning and fueling vehicles/equipment
  • Experience as garage helper or other maintenance function

Internship Working Conditions:

  • Onsite Mobility Classification – Work will be performed at a company facility
  • Valid North Carolina Class C drivers license
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening and background check
  • Prolonged standing
  • Walking on concrete surfaces for extended periods of time
  • Garage environment with associated noise, fumes and dust and tolerate heights in aerial devices
  • Must be able to lift and/or push at least 100 lbs. several times per shift
  • Must be able to carry at least 50 lbs. a distance of at least 25 feet
  • Repeated bending and twisting
  • Inside and outside work in all seasons and weather
  • This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job. The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading. This weight restriction must be maintained throughout employment within the Vehicle Maintenance Technician progression.
