The School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 9-month, fixed-term Assistant/Associate/Full Professor (Practice) position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the School Head.

As an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Full Professor of Practice in the College of Engineering, the responsibilities of this position consist of teaching undergraduate/ graduate courses related to aerospace engineering; developing and creating relationships with industry and university partners that support careers and internships in aerospace engineering and aerospace capstone projects including those that involve student competitions; advising and coaching aerospace-related students clubs and undergraduate and graduate students; serving on departmental, college, and University committees; and providing professional and community service.

Key Responsibilities

65% Partnerships/Outreach:

  • Build and maintain strategic external partnerships with industry and other university partner institutions to support teaching and research in aerospace engineering.
  • Cultivate, develop, and oversee partnerships with companies that support with aerospace internships and careers and aerospace capstone projects.
  • Oversee students in their outreach to industry and other university partner institutions.
  • Attend at least 2 student aerospace-related competitions per calendar year to maintain understanding and develop relationships with other university advisors and relevant industry leaders.
  • Advise and coach aerospace-related students clubs including but not limited to AIAA clubs.
  • Work with the OSU Foundation to raise funding for aerospace engineering when appropriate.

25% Teaching and Curriculum Development

  • Develop and update courses and teach up to two courses per academic year in the school’s aerospace engineering curriculum.
  • Conduct student assessments, including proper documentation to support ABET accreditation.
  • Participate as a member of M.S., and Honors committees. May participate as a member of Ph.D. committees if position incumbent possesses a Ph.D.
  • Advise students on projects; hold office hours; and mentor and advise students on professional aspects of the field.

10% – Scholarship and Creative Activity:

  • Participate in and present scholarship regarding aerospace engineering in professional and academic meetings and conferences.
  • Understand emerging trends in aerospace education and experiential education, through participation in internal (OSU) and external conferences, workshops, and similar training opportunities.

What You Will Need

Minimum/Required Qualifications for All Ranks (Assistant Professor (Practice), Associate Professor (Practice), or Professor (Practice)):

  • Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or other relevant field prior to the position start date.
  • Demonstrated ability or significant potential for excellence in teaching.
  • Scholarly or professional background in aerospace engineering.
  • Proven oral and written communication skills.
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and inclusion.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

Additional Minimum/Required Qualifications at rank of Associate Professor (Practice):

  • Demonstrable curricular or pedagogical innovation in engineering education or technological or practice innovation in the aerospace industry.
  • Experience leading curriculum development in a collaborative manner with other instructors or experience leading a professional engineering team in the aerospace industry.
  • Scholarly activity in fields related to aerospace engineering or mid-level managerial experience in the aerospace industry.
  • National/international record of achievement in research, instruction, and/or professional service activities commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor.
  • For candidates seeking to be hired at a rank other than Assistant Professor, they should meet the OSU teaching, advising, research and service criteria for appointment at the desired rank (see the OSU Faculty Handbook for details). OSU will consider previous years of experience at other, similar institutions towards timelines for rank or tenure promotions.

Additional Minimum/Required Qualifications at rank of Professor (Practice):

  • Distinction in research or scholarly activities in aerospace engineering or professional activities in the aerospace industry.
  • Experience leading and growing an aerospace engineering program in higher education or senior managerial experience in the aerospace industry
  • National/international record of scholarly achievement in research, instruction and/or professional service activities commensurate with the rank of Professor.
  • For candidates seeking to be hired at a rank other than Assistant Professor, they should meet the OSU teaching, advising, research and service criteria for appointment at the desired rank (see the OSU Faculty Handbook for details).
