Job Description

The Director in HIV | COVID | EV Integrated Insights within Global Decision Sciences & Insights (GDSI) participates actively in commercial efforts by providing an objective and detailed understanding of current and future markets, product performance, customers, and competitors. This individual must possess a broad skill set (e.g. analytics functional expertise, therapeutic knowledge, communication skills, etc.) to ensure efficient execution of GDSI objectives with a diverse set of key stakeholders – including but not limited to Global Strategic Marketing (GSM), Medical, Finance, Local affiliates, and global commercial leadership.

The person in this role will be responsible for generating foundational market and customer understanding and delivering clear and impactful recommendations that drive commercial strategy. Specifically, this role will use a combination of different analytic techniques to support commercialization efforts for inline and/or pipeline assets, inform the lifecycle management process and collaborate with GSM’s Therapeutic Area Leads to guide product and disease area strategy. Another important responsibility of this role is to liaise with GDSI Data Science team to establish productive working relationships and apply new modern analytics capabilities to the HIV | COVID | EV Integrated Insights team.

This role is located in our Foster City, CA office (3 days in office, 2 days work from home).

Essential Duties & Functions

  • Market Research, Forecasting, and Analytics to inform and guide global marketing strategy for inline product business performance optimization and competitive value drivers for demand generation as well as for pipeline planning
  • Liaise with GDSI Data Science CoE to bring and embed its state-of-art analytics capabilities into the HIV|COVID|EV integrate insights generation and application
  • Integrate insights generated from multiple sources (i.e., analytics, market research, forecasting, and competitive intelligence) as well as from various cross-functional teams
  • Develop clear and effective communication materials (e.g. reports, presentations) targeted to key audiences
  • Present and lead discussion of results and insights in a collaborative, efficient manner to a variety of internal stakeholders at all levels of the organization
  • Work with GSM Therapeutic Area Leads to understand the implications of market research, forecasting, and analytics insights for Gilead’s business, and develop plans to address these implications
  • Lead ad hoc strategy projects and initiatives (e.g., evaluating new indications and markets) for internal assets and external opportunities
  • Work with group leadership to improve the efficiency, consistency, rigor, and credibility of GDSI, in collaboration with key global partners (US, EU and Japan)
  • Manage vendors to determine appropriate research methodology, ensure project alignment to business objectives and guide execution and reporting

Strategic Forecasting

  • Develop long-term strategic forecasts for inline products and/or pipeline assets that incorporate epidemiology, evolving treatment paradigms, competitive products, and global pricing and access dynamics
  • Conduct forecast scenario analysis to support decision-making by Commercial, R&D, Corporate Development, Finance, and Corporate executive leadership
  • Collaborate with internal experts in Market Research, Literature Resources, Competitive Intelligence, R&D, and Marketing/Sales leads to generate robust forecast assumptions

Market and Customer Insights through Analytics and Market Research

  • Define global market research priorities in collaboration with GSM Indication and/or Therapeutic Area Leads to proactively address key business decisions
  • Scope, design, and manage the execution of analytics and quantitative market research to inform strategic revenue forecasting
  • Analyze secondary data sources (e.g., patient-level data, prescription data, epidemiology studies) to generate insights and identify implications

Partnership and Collaboration with Data Science team

  • Partner with Data Science function within GDSI to establish productive working relationships to embed and apply new modern analytics capabilities to the HIV | COVID | EV Integrated Insights team

Knowledge, Experience, & Skills

  • Excellent hands-on technical skills in analytics, forecasting, and market research
  • In-depth experience designing and conducting quantitative and qualitative primary and secondary market research. The ability to meaningfully portray and effectively communicate complex quantitative data in an easy-to-understand format is required.
  • Must have in-depth knowledge and experience in a complex franchise-specific market. Proven experience with Global Sales and Marketing organizations and experience with pharmaceutical data sources e.g., IQVIA/IMS, SHA and chart audits are required
  • Sought out as an analytical expert and, more importantly, as a strategic adviser. Grasps key issues quickly, understands the "big picture" and links market insights to larger issues
  • Analytical Thinker: Understands how to synthesize facts and information from varied data sources, both new and pre-existing, into discernable insights and perspectives; takes a problem-solving approach by connecting analytical thinking with an understanding of business
  • Anticipates Customer Needs: Knowledgeable in current and possible future trends, knows the competition; is aware of how strategies and tactics work in the marketplace. Is dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal customers

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to lead: Resolve conflict, and drive consensus among individuals from a variety of disciplines; Ability to represent the GDSI function on cross-functional teams, including accountability for GDSI contributions and provision of information and recommendations
  • Strong communication skills with an ability to efficiently and productively communicate both orally and in writing are required. Demonstrated persuasive written and verbal communication skills and effective in a variety of presentation settings. Comfortable influencing senior management
  • Strong commitment to quality. Consistently and thoroughly reviews work for accuracy before sharing with a wider audience. Delivers final products that are well vetted and reliable
  • Good project management skills and the ability to meet tight deadlines in an environment of competing and changing priorities. Must have strong task management skills to include planning, prioritization, objective setting, and meeting management and plan execution. In-depth ability to use Microsoft Office and other planning software required
  • Some travel required

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree and Twelve Years’ Experience

OR

  • Masters' Degree and Ten Years’ Experience

OR

  • PhD and Eight Years’ Experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 13+ years of relevant pharmaceutical industry experience, including 5+ years of analytics, forecasting, and market research experience
  • Experience in HIV/COVID/EV is preferred, but not
  • Significant experience conducting primary market research, analytics, and forecasting
  • Experience developing and using Excel-based models and conducting quantitative analysis
  • Previous experience in launching products, and exposure to pharmaceutical product development and brand marketing
  • BA/BS degree in analytics, business, finance, life sciences or medicine is required, and an MBA or advanced degree in quantitative disciplines
  • Experience in life sciences, healthcare, pharmaceutical and biotech industry

The salary range for this position is: $221,170.00 - $286,220.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
