Job Description


The Advanced Radar Research Center’s Mechanical Engineer applies the physical and mechanical principles from numerous mechanical engineering disciplines in the development of radar systems. This individual will design, develop and test all aspects of mechanical components, equipment, and machinery. This position also supports numerous projects at varying stages of lifecycle development. It requires a person who is driven to excel in a hands-on design, integration, and testing environment while collaborating with a team of multi-disciplinary professionals.

Typical Functions May Include:

  • Designs, develops, fabricates, and tests mechanical components, equipment, and machinery.
  • Identifies operating and installation problems and recommends solutions.
  • Develops specifications for the selection, application, and installation of mechanical equipment.
  • Develops mechanical/structural system requirements and assists in the development of project requirements and specifications, including costing, lead times and alternative solutions.
  • Provides periodic progress reports for current projects.
  • Purchase mechanical hardware and components, coordinate with outside vendors, and ensure that received parts meet desired specifications.
  • Assists in the preparation of documentation for new budget requirements and overall project cost estimates.
  • Provides direction and guidance to personnel, ensuring that personnel are informed of and adhere to established health and safety practices associated with assigned tasks.
  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the functions of the position.

Job Requirements


Required Education: Bachelor’s degree, AND: 

Experience: 36 months in mechanical engineering work/military experience

Equivalency/Substitution: Will accept 48 months of related experience in lieu of the Bachelor’s degree for a total of 84 months of related experience.

Physical Requirement: Must be able to engage in repetitive motions and communicate effectively. Frequent exposure to pressure caused by deadlines and busy periods; ability to communicate, including expressing oneself or exchanging information with others; ability to use a computer daily.

Department Preferences: 

  • At least 24 months of 3D CAD/modeling, or machining/fabrication, or related areas of experience 
  • MS degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field or equivalent military/work experience 
  • 1+ years experience with common metal manufacturing and fabrication processes
  • Thermal, fluid, and structural simulation experience (e.g., ANSYS)
  • Experience with radars and associated technologies, familiar with basic radar concepts
  • Proficiency in the design, analysis, modeling, integration, and testing of mechanical components.
