Physics Internship: Optical Modeling & Optimization of EUV Source

ASML

Introduction to the job

Our group's mission is to deliver industrialized and optimal solutions to achieve spectrally-pure collection of EUV radiation, enabling robust and efficient performance of the next generation of EUV photolithography machines. Our main responsibility lies in understanding and modeling the fundamental physical and optical effects of the EUV source. This includes physical effects related to the generation of EUV radiation via a laser-driven tin plasma, efficient collection and transmission of this radiation, thermal effects within the EUV source, and the design and qualification of EUV optics, among others. To enable our work, we employ a wide range of commercial and in-house physical modeling applications/codes and we have a strong competence in fundamental physics, mathematics, scientific computing and data analysis. We are looking for an enthusiastic intern to join our team and help bring our models to the next level.

Your Assignment

In general, you will be building and validating physical/optical models of the EUV optical system, which will be used to simulate and better understand the behavior of the real world systems. The work will begin with a survey of the current state-of-the-art models and relevant underlying physics.

Next, you will generate and validate simulation models/code to imitate real system processes, such as a measurement of system power or throughput.

In addition, you will design and perform sensitivity studies to map the complex relationships between physical processes within the source and the system performance.

Working together with our team, you will also help build models/algorithms to efficiently extract relevant physical properties from real system measurements. For example, we may wish to extract plasma emission properties from a combination of system signals.

Lastly, all results, code, and models will be documented and shared with relevant stakeholders.

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.

Your Profile

To be a perfect match for this internship, you:

  • Are a Master student in the field of Physics, Mathematics, or Computer science/programming
  • Have knowledge in physics and python program language (necessary)
  • Have knowledge in optics and optical modelling (nice to have)

This is an apprentice internship with the duration of 6-12 months, for 5 days a week, starting as soon as possible.

Please note that we can only consider students who are enrolled at a school for the entire duration of the internship.

Diversity and inclusion

ASML - be part of progress

ASML is a high-tech company headquartered in the Netherlands. We manufacture the complex lithography machines that chipmakers use to produce integrated circuits, or computer chips. What we do is at the heart of all the electronic devices that keep us informed, entertained and connected. Every day, you use electronics that simply wouldn’t exist without our machines.

Behind ASML’s innovations are engineers who think ahead. The people who work at our company include some of the most creative minds in physics, electrical engineering, mathematics, chemistry, mechatronics, optics, mechanical engineering, computer science and many more non-technical related employees.

We believe we can always do better. We believe the winning idea can come from anyone. We love what we do – not because it’s easy, but because it’s hard.

Students - getting ready for the real world

We’re a global team of about 40,000 people of 120 different nationalities and counting. Headquartered in Europe’s top tech hub, the Brainport Eindhoven region in the Netherlands, our operations are spread across Europe, Asia and the US.

In such an environment, your colleagues may be sitting next door, or they could be thousands of kilometers away in a different country – or even working for a different company.

An internship at ASML is the opportunity to get to know not only the world of the semiconductor industry, but yourself – you’ll discover just what excites you most. Will you design a part of the machine, or make sure it gets built to the tightest possible specifications? Will you write software that drives the system to its best performance, or work side-by-side with the engineers of our customers in a fab, optimizing a system to the requirements of the customer? Anything is possible!

How will you be part of progress?
