To achieve this goal, the Hardware, Infrastructure Management, and Fundamentals Engineering (HIFE) team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for hardware manufacturing, improving the planning process, quality, delivery, scale and sustainability related to Microsoft cloud hardware. We are looking for seasoned engineers with a dedicated passion for customer focused solutions, insight and industry knowledge to envision and implement future technical solutions that will manage and optimize the Cloud infrastructure.

We are looking for a Senior Manufacturing Engineering Engineer to join the team.

The SCHIE HIFE Manufacturing Engineering (MfgEng) is a team that collaborates with Microsoft’s suppliers, engineering design teams, HMPM, business managers, and supply chain managers to ensure that the newest hardware that powers Microsoft’s cloud services is available to our customers on time and at the highest levels of quality. A critical function in this work ensures the newest hardware developed by Microsoft is built at our supplier’s factories with efficiency, safety, and at the highest levels of quality. MfgEng team also ensure that our suppliers empower our customers by delivering this hardware and being agile and creative to work through the challenges of new product manufacturing.

We are looking for a passionate, curious, and high-energy individual with a background on server design, packaging, liquid cooling and manufacturing of products that cover Storage/Compute and GPU based AI workloads to join our team and take part in our vision to empower every person and organization on the planet to achieve more with Microsoft’s technology.

Manufacturing Engineering works with high volume assembly factories, suppliers, hardware design teams, quality teams, rack server integrators, and Microsoft data centers to develop and improve manufacturing efficiencies and ensure quality by studying product design, manufacturing methods, and applying LEAN manufacturing principles. Supporting manufacturing needs from prototypes to end of life. ME. Eng. also be responsible for witnessing and executing power, power design quality and thermal validation testing.

  • Familiar with Vacuum / Thermoforming (trays, blisters), Packaging design and development.
  • Ability to review and implement packaging solutions with suppliers which is capable to protect and preserve products during transportation, storage, and handling.
  • Experience with thermal/mechanical manufacturing processes including tooling/fixturing and production line development for high-volume.
  • Experience in designing, testing, and troubleshooting liquid cooling systems for electronics or other devices.
  • Knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, electronics, and computer hardware.
  • Work with the IC design manufacturing team to implement new ASIC or CPU/GPU into our new Cloud server design for AI or Cloud computing.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure manufacturing processes are efficient and effective.
  • Create reference guidelines for new chipset designs.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to develop and execute product manufacturing plans.
  • Conduct research to improve existing manufacturing processes.
  • Create and maintain documentation related to manufacturing processes.
  • Evaluates manufacturing assembly processes by designing and conducting research programs; applying knowledge of product design, fabrication, assembly, tooling, and materials; conferring with equipment vendors; soliciting observations from operators.
  • Develops manufacturing processes by studying product requirements; researching, designing, modifying, and testing manufacturing methods and equipment; conferring with equipment vendors.
  • Improves factory production efficiency by analyzing and planning workflow, space requirements, and equipment layout.
  • Assures product and process quality by designing control systems, testing finished- product and process capabilities; establishing standards; confirming manufacturing processes.
  • Provides manufacturing decision-making information by calculating production, labor, and material costs; reviewing production schedules; estimating future requirements.
  • Prepare product and process reports by collecting data, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Provides manufacturing engineering support by providing clear requirements and expectations.
  • Maintains product and company reputation by complying with government regulations.
  • Evaluating printed circuit board assembly and system assembly factories to ensure the correct control systems are in place to produce consistent quality and repeatable results.
  • Work with Microsoft’s System Integrators to supervise and review (1) Power and Airflow Testing and (2) Power Quality Testing for MSFT cloud server infrastructure. The candidate will be qualifying for hardware SKUs and systems to demonstrate how servers will operate under a range of conditions that would be expected throughout their useful life in a Microsoft data center.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in manufacturing, material, mechanical, electrical, and industrial engineering, or related field AND 5+ years experience in a manufacturing environment/repair
  • OR Master's Degree in manufacturing, material, mechanical, electrical, and industrial engineering, or related field AND 4+ years experience in a manufacturing environment /repair
  • OR 7+ years equivalent experience.
  • ASIC, server product design experience, package design or liquid cooling system.
  • At least 10 years of experience preferred or up in ASIC/CPU/GPU system server related.
  • Experience in ASIC or Cloud server systems hardware design and integration
  • Experience as an AE or FAE of ASIC/CPU/GPU or ASIC/SOC design related.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and equipment.
  • Experience with Stencil design for new chipset designs.
  • Experience with NPI- New Product Introduction process
  • Experience in PCBA design or manufacturing process
  • Knowledge of server manufacturing, mechanical, cooling design, power consumption, airflow and hands-on experience in power, airflow, and power quality measurements. 
  • Self-motivated, detail oriented individual must be able to work collaboratively in team environment and across internal divisions and industry (OEM, ODM). 
  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Server
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Bills of materials and change control and review.
  • Able to read and familiarize mechanical drawings design and specifications. 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience in using Creo software.
  • Familiar with liquid cooling infrastructure and its manufacturing process in L10 and L11
  • Knowledge of welding, machining, die-casting, buried tube technology and experience in coil, cold plate, and pumping mechanism qualification.
  • Identify, evaluate packaging materials, which comply with eco-friendly objectives.
  • Lead packaging design optimization activities to form a cost-effective solution without sacrificing quality.

Other Qualifications

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

  • OR Master's Degree in manufacturing, material, mechanical, electrical, and industrial engineering, or related field AND 6+ years experience in a high-volume manufacturing environment
  • OR Doctorate in manufacturing, material, mechanical, electrical, and industrial engineering, or related field AND 3+ years experience in a manufacturing environment/repair
  • OR 9+ years equivalent experience.
  • Patent or track record of engineering excellency.
  • Experience with industry standard benchmarks: SPEC power, IO-Meter, IPC, JEDEC
  • Experience with Intel, AMD and ARM system and ASIC/CPU/GPU architecture is a plus
  • Valor, Creo and Cadence Allegro software knowledge
  • Familiar with Mechanical parts or tooling parts design review for Server or large system.
  • Stencil design review for new chipset designs
  • Data Center and Cloud Hardware / MFG / Networking Experience
  • Pre-DFx / In-build DFx / Post-build DFx capabilities, E2E NUDD analysis
  • Manufacturing automation/Data collection and display/ AIoT experience is a plus.
