About the Position: The reporter for China Law & Practice, an English-speaking legal and regulatory focused publication and database that sits as part of ALM’s global newsroom, will work to keep the legal industry informed of updates in Chinese regulations and their impact on lawyers and corporations. Known for both its expert translations of Chinese laws for an English-speaking audience and its insightful analysis of what the regulatory developments mean, China Law & Practice helps keep law firms and legal departments around the globe informed of potential legal challenges or impacts to how they conduct their business. 

This role will follow the latest updates to Chinese laws and proposed regulations, writing quick news round-ups and longer-form analysis pieces explaining the impact of these changes for our global audience. The role will work with a team of editors to deliver analysis gleaned from interviews with law firms, in-house counsel and business professionals. The China Law & Practice reporter will cover issues ranging from impacts to mergers and acquisitions, trade issues between China and other nations, private equity, cybersecurity, foreign direct investment and any other topic of interest to our global business audience that is being impacted by new or updated regulations in China. While writing mainly for China Law & Practice, the reporter’s work can be seen by a growing international audience as part of ALM’s Law.com International news platform. 

Candidate should have knowledge of China and preferably speak Mandarin and English. 

They also must have journalism training and experience. 

This position can be based in Asia; the United Kingdom or the United States. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Write frequent news roundups that tie in changes to the business climate in China driven by new regulations.
  • Write weekly features on new legislation and the impact lawyers and other sources are saying that new legislation will have on the market.
  • Work with editors to develop and incorporate historical perspective of regulatory changes overtime.
  • Grow China Law & Practice’s stable of in-house legal department sources and insights, focusing coverage on the impact to their roles and companies when regulatory changes occur.
  • Identify and write case studies that exemplify the impacts of regulatory shifts.
  • Build out a stable of sources within and outside China who can be go-to experts on various practice areas frequently impacted by regulatory changes.
  • Work with editors to increase the relevancy of CLP for various audience segments, including in-house counsel, large law firms and various geographical markets.
  • Work with editors to identify priority coverage areas based on practice area interest and frequent areas of legislative upheaval.
  • Send out newsletters to China Law & Practice readers.
  • Develop podcasts and other ways of connecting with readers aside from articles.

Qualifications: 

  • Understand and write about sophisticated content across a range of regulatory topics
  • Toggle between quick turnaround and longer-form writing
  • Develop sources and case studies that can deliver better insights to our audience
  • Work with a team of reporters and editors to collaborate on story ideas and projects
  • Deliver complex content in a succinct way
  • Strong English writing skills are a must
  • Chinese language skills a plus
  • Experience covering regulatory topics in region a plus
  • Must have journalism training and some work experience as a reporter
