The Compliance & Tax Accountant (CTA) will be the (SME) subject matter expert for all tax and compliance related matters. As the CTA, your primary goal is to recommend effective tax strategies that comply with laws and promote our company’s financial well-being. In this role, you will be responsible for managing all tax state and local tax filings & payments, manage grant applications, analyzing tax regulations, monitoring industry trends, file censuses, adding and removing state and local tax accounts as needed, and will be heavily involved in annual tax returns. You will be available and help with ad hoc projects and as well as monthly, quarterly, and annual filings.

The CTA position requires the ability to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of accounting procedures, tax specialty, as well as strong time management skills with the ability to meet strict deadlines. Additionally, in addition to being an excellent communicator, our ideal candidate will be an excellent communicator and demonstrate keen attention to detail and work accuracy.

Essential Functions/Qualifications

The responsibilities of the position include the following:

  • Prepare state and local tax filings, payments, necessary paperwork, and reports.
  • Assess and research difficult tax issues to identify solutions.
  • Manage and maintain the company’s tax database.
  • Determine tax savings and recommend strategies to improve profits.
  • Ensure you comply with regulations by forwarding required information to federal, state, and local authorities.
  • Administer the B&O tax program, filing monthly taxes, evaluating, and recommending policies, procedures, and other operating protocols related to the program.
  • Ensure sales tax compliance; including monthly journal entries, reviewing invoices, and gathering data for monthly compliance.
  • Manage all facility property appraisals including filing and coordinating property tax payments.
  • Assist with production and distribution of annual K1s to Company shareholders.
  • Perform compliance reporting to include censuses and other compliance related reports to include maintain accurate quietly and annual tax reports.
  • Accurately and confidently manage all licensing recording including filing for and maintaining business licenses.
  • Help with any ad hoc projects as well as monthly, quarterly, and annual filings.
  • Offer support and guidance during company audits both independently and third-party requests.
  • Evaluate tax regulations and suggest policies that diminish the tax burden. Including researching and applying for tax credits and applicable grants
  • Ensure the company is following the state guidelines, rules, and regulations by filing our Alaska DOR report.
  • Keep track of industry trends and changes related to taxes, notifying appropriate internal key stakeholders to help maintain compliances and minimize direct monetary impact.

  • Organization – In order to be successful as a Compliance & Tax Accountant (CTA), you must be strategic, highly organized, and have the ability to seamlessly reprioritize your tasks throughout the day. This role requires excellent organizational skills to track and manage financial needs across all areas of our business both forward and backwards.
  • Experience working in a high-volume, fast paced environment required. Ability to manage large sets of data, utilize strong analytical and financial modeling skills with ability to build Excel pivot tables, and graphs to identify insights. You will need the ability to adapt and excel when business plans change.
  • Attention to detail – You can prioritize tasks, work with a sense of urgency, yet leave nothing to chance. Ability to be creative and innovative while maintaining attention to detail. You are able to factor in every piece of information that will lead to improved processes and reduced cost. Additionally, you will have a strong self-review work process to ensure the work product being complete is accurate.
  • Advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and ERP related systems. Proficient in Excel & Microsoft Office - able to use MS Word to edit text documents, create templates, and automate the creation of tables of content. Running and creating functions, pivot tables, and charts in excel.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or relevant field.
  • 4+ years of experience working as Tax Compliance Manager, Tax Accountant, or similar role.
  • Prior work in consumer goods, food and beverage, or seafood industries preferred.
  • CPA strongly preferred but not a requirement.
  • Proven proficiency in spreadsheets, databases, and financial software applications (including the software applications that you are currently using in your organization or plan to use in the future)
  • In-depth knowledge of accounting and bookkeeping processes.

Work Environment and Schedule

This position is for our Seattle, WA corporate office. Open to hybrid (for right candidate), would require at least 3 days per week in office.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.

Mental Activities

The employee is frequently required to use interpersonal and teamwork skills. The employee needs to be able to discern details on timesheets and reconcile appropriate calculations. The employee needs to regularly demonstrate attention to detail. The employee is occasionally required to use creativity, independent judgment, discretion, and problem analysis.

Salary Disclosure

The typical base pay range for this role is $75,000-$90,000 per year. Individual base pay depends on various factors, in addition to primary work location, such as complexity and responsibility of role, job duties/requirements, and relevant experience and skills.
