Position Summary: 

The Senior Mechanical Designer designs, develops and verifies new and existing products and platforms. They construct models and build prototypes, calculate and analyze test results and prepare detailed reports with recommendations and conclusions. They also develop and maintain technical expertise on advances and innovations in research and science. The Sr Mechanical Engineer collaborates with other departments, such as manufacturing, quality, production and procurement to ensure product design meets company goals. This Senior role also coaches and mentors other engineers.

  • Successfully determine and write the functional requirements for a project.
  • Effectively design, develop, and document mechanical components to meet the product requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical problems in projects, production or service areas.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Serves as a technical lead in areas of assigned responsibility including mechanical design and analysis, material selection, dimensional analysis, and testing. 
  • Prepares product development criteria in accordance with management objectives. Works with suppliers to validate product designs meet the required specifications. 
  • Documents benchmarking activities.
  • Drives new product designs and product modifications from initial design through production with effective use of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools, including Statistical, Motion, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and other tools. Conducts technical project reviews at various stages in the life cycle gating process.
  • Develops appropriate documentation outlining design parameters, assumptions and results.
  • Leads technical design reviews of products and systems, including components and assemblies.
  • Prepares reports and presents content as requested. Ensure technical results are clearly conveyed and understood
  • Ensures compliance to regulatory requirements including Underwriters Laboratories (UL), National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), Department of Energy and other standards. Participates in selection of vendors and fabrication sources to ensure quality and compliance to released specifications.
  • Conducts Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis (DFMEA), Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Statistical Process Control (SPC) to identify quality and reliability issues.
  • Creates and manages engineering change orders (ECO) and temporary change notices (TCN). Dispositions First Article Inspections (FAI) and Material Defect Reports (MDR).
  • Adheres to company document control standards, ensuring consistent checking and approval of drawings and data.
  • Subject matter expert in quality investigations to identify root cause, develop solutions and issue formal recommendations.
  • Creates mechanical design standards to improve design, troubleshooting and assembly procedures. Conducts product reviews for the improvement and further development of existing product designs.
  • Assist other departments in the preparation of manuals and sales literature on assigned projects. Analyzes historical and current designs to meet customer specifications. 
  • Ensures that effective and pro-active communication is maintained with all internal and external stakeholders. Initiates meetings, correspondence, and discussion with appropriate project resources when product or project scope, schedule and cost require clarification.
  • Maintains and enhances knowledge with current Mechanical Design practice, including analysis and simulation technologies. Maintains and develops proficiency with the use of in-house and industry recognized tools.
  • Coaches and mentors other engineers.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 7+ years of experience in mechanical engineering
  • Proficient in CAD, computer-aided engineering (CAE), and FEA (Solid Works and Creo a plus), tolerance stack analysis, and geometric dimensioning and tolerance (GD&T)
  • Ability to translate customer requirements into product requirements
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and troubleshoot complex design issues using analytical tools
  • Professionally interact with peers, stakeholders, management, suppliers, and customers
  • Effective communication skills, including excellent oral and written skills
  • Aptitude to manage multiple assignments while meeting established deadlines
  • Ability to excel in a collaborative team environment
  • Minimal travel to conferences, trainings and customers

Preferred:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field plus 3 years of experience in mechanical engineering
  • Previous design experience in electric motor, hydraulic or valve products
  • SolidWorks Certification
  • Licensed Professional Engineer

Work Environment

This position works primarily in an office environment using computer and technology. Verbal and auditory capability are required. Occasional exposure in production plant where large equipment and noise are prevalent. Safety gear is required in these areas.

This position may work from home up to 2X/week if performance is in good standing.
